HBO: Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi

    Anybody else seen this?

The intro to the show spotlighted Lakewood and their 35,000 weekly attendance. The bit they had with Joel Osteen did not come across as political, which would click with the things I have read on this very board.

They did have interviews with Jerry Fallwell and the infamous Ted Haggard, that were mostly political. The documnetary did nothing to distinguish Osteen from these "nut jobs".

They did a segment with a "Christian Comedian", which I did find a bit thought provoking. This comedian (who I could not find on the first page a google search fwiw) made the point that if he change his moniker to "Gay Comedian" he could get booked everywhere. Or IOW when people hear "christian" they think "nut job" or some such.

Between the lines, I this comedian was also saying that the USA is at war with his Christian beliefs and maybe all Christian beliefs.

I've seen reviews on it. They've typically been 1.5 stars-3 stars. I'm normally not a fan of documentaries, so I probably won't catch this anyway. Since it's on HBO, I'm going to guess that the reviews I've read are correct in that Ms. Pelosi (or the editor) focuses on the footage that would bring the most attention. I heard her last documentary with Bush was pretty good, though I also passed on that one. I'm curious as to what kind of treatment she would give to perhaps someone on the left.

Evangelicals can be controversial. Parts of the documentary are certainly controversial. But I wonder if Christians would be offended though.

I think it depends on how she presents us. Obviously, it would be silly of us to get offended simply because she shows Ted Haggard (since she filmed him BEFORE the scandal) or some other aspects of Evangelicals that some of us might not agree with. You can definetely present what some people call the "wacky" characters of my faith objectively. I don't know her style, so I have no clue about it.

"Journeys with George", her doc on Bush's 2000 Presidential campaign, was excellent, and I am looking forward to seeing this one.

I've been watching One Punk Under God on Sundance. Really interesting show.

This one on HBO sounds embarassing.

The only one I think that might be embarassed is Ted Haggard and maybe his ex-congregation. Not unless, you find Fallwell generally embarassing.

Most of the Christians in the documentary appeared to be very sincere in their believes.

    Yeah, I find Falwell embarassing.

That's good news, though, that you sensed sincerity.
