CNN's Whitney Casey reports (May 8) NORTHBROOK, Illinois (CNN) -- Authorities Wednesday were investigating what started as a touch football game between high school junior and senior girls but escalated into violence on the younger girls, sending five to a hospital. Amateur videotape shot at the scene, of what was supposed to be an initiation for Glenbrook North High School junior girls, shows several students huddled together on the ground while others throw objects at them, including large plastic buckets. One girl walks behind the seated girls and slaps them on the back of the head. Another girl holds up what appears to be an intestine. At least one girl reported having a pig's intestine wrapped around her neck. Five girls were treated and released at Glenbrook Hospital, spokeswoman Karen Ganz told CNN Wednesday. Ganz declined to describe their injuries because the patients are minors. "Basically it started out as a fun hazing like our initiation into our senior year," one girl who had been injured said. "About 10 minutes into it, everything changed -- buckets were flying ... people were bleeding. Girls were unconscious." Dozens of students had come to watch the event and some of them, including male bystanders, joined in. "When I looked up and I saw blood, I knew that this wasn't right," another girl said. "This is from a paint can being thrown at me," she said, pointing to her shoulder. "Tabasco sauce, vinegar and stuff like that [was put] in my eye." Witnesses also reported urine, feces and fish guts were thrown, and others said they had been forced to eat mud. The Cook County sheriff's department and the county's Forest Preserve District police are investigating the incident, which happened on Forest Preserve property near Northbrook. The high school principal said he was "very sad" about what happened. I've always been for hazing in college, but this, #1: is in high school, and #2: has human excrement, and finally #3: has outsider's. This is an outrage and whoever was responsible should be fired/expelled. However, I still stand strong on hazing being a good ritual, as long as the supervisors are responsible, should things get out of hand.
The hard part is finding college kids that you know are responsible. I am not willing to put my life, or the lives of my children, in the hands of some college kid who may or may not be responsible. I recently completed my college education and had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with college age students. In my opinion most 19 and 20 year olds think they know everything, but in reality they know very little. I am 43 years old and I can tell you that when I was 20 years old I thought I was real smart, I thought I was real responsible, and of course I was neither. I'm sure a lot people will say that they know many responsible young people, and I'm sure there are some out there. But, it seems like every year we here about hazing rituals that end in disaster.
My cousin died from being forced to drink alcohol at a fraternity hazing event. His "brothers" were thrown in jail for manslaughter. Two got parole last year. I thought about initiating them with my fist to their faces, but the last thing I need to do is get sued by people that killed a family member. I think all hazing is stupid.
Supermac34, I'm sorry for your loss and I understand your position although I disagree with the totality of it. I was hazed, and hazed many while in the navy and no one was ever seriously hurt. Of course when you mix in x-factors like alchohol and teenagers, it's bound to go down a steep hill. By the way I saw on MSNBC yesterday that this occured on a weekend, off campus and with no school supervision, it seems like it would be hard to sue the school. To me it is pretty obvious who is to blame here, the parents.
Those kids are going to rot in hell. I think from the video, they need to pick out the bastards who did this and expell them from the school. I saw the video last night on Dateline, and the brutality the girls had to go through. It was just sad.

I saw this video on the news when I was eating at Fuddruckers. I had no idea what was going on because there was no sound or captions. I was wondering why blurred out people where having buckets thrown at them.
butt crack? honestly, I do not see the purpose in *any* hazing ritual, and even though I haven't lived through Supermac's horrible type of loss, I have similar feelings. It boils down to mammalian dominance rituals, and I know we're mammals, but come on already. When you see your dog trying to mount the neighbors' dog, you (I hope) tell it to stop. So why do we endorse any kind of hazing with humans? Htownhero, I like and respect your posts, so I'd love to read your take on it. It sounds like you thought it served a purpose in the navy, right? I'm open to changing my mind on it.
