It is so ugly that it convinced the Nets to go into a full-blown hack-a-chuck defense, not realizing that somehow he is actually a 60% FT shooter.

That was pretty weak IMO. Its basically telling your team that they should give up. Its one thing to send someone like Ben Wallace to the line who can easily go 2-10 on a bad night. But to send a 60% free throw shooter to the line and think it will improve your defensive chances is pretty much giving up.

part of it is the lane violations. it's not just this game. every team already has a scouting report on hayes, but whenever he goes up there, whistle blows. i really have never ever remembered anyone causing this much disruption in the paint because of a FT.

someone refresh my memory, but i remember chievous as having a real ugly FT shot, but it's not like chuck's

Anthony Mason had a similar form when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks. And similarily, he ce also drew a lot of lane violations

It's like trying to draw offside in football. :D

It's a good tactic. It deceives your opponents into thinking you are a bad ft shooter. And it gives you more chances to make a ft because they commit lane violation when you miss.

It is pretty disgusting. For the old timers on the board, it reminds me of Larry "Mr. Mean" Smith's FT "style."

What gets me is the Rockets team KNOWS he has that hitch in his shot, yet they STILL step into the lane before he releases. They should know better. Now, these teams in the East that never seen Chuck shoot, they will get fooled.

It's comical everytime he goes to the line.

What's strange, is that Chuck and someone on the Rox "worked" on that shot all summer, and that's the best they came up with?
Granted, it's better than last year, when he actually pulled his toes off the floor, and put his weight on his heels when he shot....talk about ugly.

Do any of you remember his one and only "jump" shot this season? My God, that was the most ugly and hilarious shot ever.

Could be worse... he could have Bo Outlaw's free throw stroke.

He didn't pick up the hitch until his junior year.

Why does you he do it anyway? Just do the normal stroke.

That hitch might have actually helped his percentage, actually. I would say he draws a lane violation on his second miss about 80% of the time. His FT% might be closer to 50% without all those lane violations.

This is sort of an aside, but as well as Juwan has played offensively this season and as limited as Hayes is offensively, it's interesting that their PER is almost identical right now. Juwan has 13.1 PER, and Hayes has a 13.0 PER.
