Don't expect to see the same Atlanta Hawks this time next month.

Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Hawks are a team in turmoil, with everyone from interim coach Terry Stotts, who is 3-10 since taking over, to GM Pete Babcock feeling the heat from owners AOL Time Warner over the team's lack of performance and lack of interest from the community.

Smith writes that just about any Hawk could be had as this year's trade deadline looms, with Atlanta - who is in luxury tax waters - preferring ending contracts in an effort to get under the cap to allow them to start over.

"I can't accept it," said longtime president Stan Kasten. "If this keeps up, there will be more changes. I can tell you we're actively looking at everything."

One move that Smith writes could occur involves the Hawks and the Heat, with Miami acquiring Shareef Abdur-Rahim for the disabled Alonzo Mourning. The logic behind the move is Abdur-Rahim would be better than anyone the Heat could get in free agency with their $7 million in expected cap space, and that isn't expected to increase unless the team can dump the contracts of either/both Brian Grant and Eddie Jones. Thus far their have been no bites, but the Bulls continue to show interest in Jones.

Another option for the Hawks could be the Trailblazers, with Scottie Pippen and his expiring $19 million contract the drawing card.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Although Rice's contract doesn't expire this offseason, it does expire the next. They have no PG, so Moochie may play some quality minutes there. No way they'd take MoT, but Cato is playing incredibly well, and he's from Atlanta if I remember correctly.

Terry, Robinson, and Reef are all on the block. Would you guys swap Rice and Cato for Ratliff and Robinson?

I'd like to have Reef, but he seems to have that "never win" tag. Plus, he plays NO defense whatsoever, and that's not a Rockets-type player.

Robinson is apparently very selfish, and the only thing he really does well is shoot and rebound. Judging by his FG% this year, his shooting has taken a nose dive.

    Any thoughts?

No Robinson. No. Rice and Mooch for Reef? That I would do. Or for Ratliff and Terry. (Which would make Cato available and valuable, tho he is value enhancing right where he is!)

Here's a stat for those who want to trade Cato:

In OVERALL Rebounds/minute, Cato is 4th. He's trailing only Mark Strickland (played only 4 games, 3.2min/game), Marcus Camby (played only 1 game, 7min/game), and Ben Wallace (plays 39.7min/game on average).

Which means, generaly, for players who really play, he trails only Ben Wallace in rebounding per minutes, or 48 minutes.

That's incredible. He also blocks shots and plays great defense. If it were up to me, Cato would be here a long long time with the way he's been playing. GREAT player to have off the bench when you have Yao Ming. Cato could start for 20 other teams.

The problem with Reef is, he's never had a winning season, and he plays no defense.

When it all comes down to it, I think Minnesotta will probably deal with them.

Ratliff would be an interesting acquisition as a PF, but that would stunt Fast Eddie's growth. Other than Ratliff, I can't see any of the others as being positive acquisitions.

Well, DerMarr Johnson would have been interesting, but I'm afraid he's done. I hope not. It's a shame to see the career of someone that young ended by something so stupid.

Rats, I hit the send button while I was editing.

It looks like the real fire sale may be in Cleveland. That ship is sinking faster than the British in Lake Erie. Does Chris Mihm have any game at all -- he and Jason Collier are the same height and weight, but Jason has a great team attitude.

There's Desagana Diop at 7-0 and 300 pounds, but will he ever learn to play? There was a time when I was hoping we could draft him, but now I'm glad wishes don't always come true immediately.

Anyway, the next few weeks will be interesting. I hope the Rockets don't get trigger happy, but C.D. and Rudy do have a way of strengthening the team without warning, as with the Posey acquisition. Still, as a fan, I like the flavor of our current team.

Who would they want from us anyway? If they're looking for people in the final year of their contract, I'm pretty sure we don't have anyone that fits the bill.

I'd love to get Shareef, but I'll be happy staying put. Also, I don't think it'll be Shareef that's dealt, but Robinson.

What do we want anyone from Hawks other than Ratliff (to make YM mad ;) )? Why don't we need more scorers (Abdur-Rahim and Robinson)? Plus they are both selfish players and play no defense.

Ratliffe would be nice...but the only person I would be willing to give up is Rice, and I doubt they want him..

Cato, imo, stays here...last year I would have said to dump him...but he seems to have found heart over the offseason..

I can't see any deal with Atl going down, but I wouldnt be surprised if they did...

Fire sale or no fire sale. If anyone thinks that the Hawks would trade Ratliff and Robinson for Cato and Rice, they are kidding themselves.

Ratliff is better than Cato and Robinson is WAY better than Rice. The Hawks would laugh.

Besides, the Hawks are trying to dump salary. That rules out Cato, Rice, Taylor and Moochie. I would not trade any other players on our team for a Reef, Robo, etc. :)

I'd be interested in acquiring this Terry Stotts guy.

Whats up VERSE....I actually would be happy if rudy just hired an assistant "well-versed" in the X's and O's of offense. rudy is effective at finding talent and keeping it, but IMO is clueless in the strategic department. Let's face it, this team is never gonna get past the first round w/ our guards dribbling out the clock and running the same fruitless high screen pnr every time down court. Allowing rudy to go on with his undisciplined structureless charade of an offense will make Yao long for Wang Fei. I just want to see some tangible progress made in terms of a team offense. I wouldn't mind if we lost 15 of the next 20 games as long as an effective system was being implimented that would pay dividends in seasons to come. What happened to the motion or quasi-motion sets rudy spoke about in preseason?? I'm sick of all the youth/injuries/practice time excuses. Our team has matured little in the past few years. Cat still takes the same ill-advised shots, Francis still jumps to pass out of desperation w/ nowhere to go, and the little dribbler still does you know what. I am convinced they make all these mistakes game after game not because they're incredibly stupid or young, but simply because they have no direction or system to work off of in the offense. A good offensive coach could make all these guys look like seasoned veterans.

There's no one from Atlanta I'd want.

SAR would be nice, but even IF we could get him for Rice + filler, not sure it would be the right move.

    1. That would be giving up on Griff almost entirely.
    2. He needs/wants touches that wont be there.
    3. Too much longterm $$$ that I don't think Les would be willing to pay for.
    4. screws up chemistry, see Blazers.

Theo is breaking down and only getting older.

Terry in no way fits on this team.

No need for GRob at all.

That Gasol/SAR trade is looking worse and worse. :p

I'd check on Abdur-Rahim. We have a lot of pieces we could trade for him. He is a very, very good player that can be a great complement to Ming. Preferably, we move a big contract and a cheap but very good talent to get him. Better than what else in on the table. Taylor plus Cuttino? Rice plus Griffin? You used the words "fire sale" and they need a pg so maybe even Mooch plus Cato. I love Cato this year, but I'd part with him to get an allstar next to Ming. Reef is still young, too, and can absolutely play, esp with a SF and YM, where he fits much much better than next to Glen Robinson and w/ Jason Terry. Yao could hit Reef all day long for buckets. Ideally, I suppose I'd move Taylor and Mooch - same kind of player upgraded, Mooch eliminated to a team in need of a pg.

Stotts would be nice. I'd really love Bill Fitch on the bench as asst. with Rudy, for real veteran help.
