    It reads

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The agent for Vernon Maxwell says the Seattle SuperSonics guard will surrender to police next week to answer a domestic violence complaint.

Dwight Manley of the California-based United Sports Agency said Wednesday that Maxwell is handling family issues before turning himself in. Maxwell lives in Atlanta.

Maxwell played with the Charlotte Hornets for two months in 1998 and signed a three-year contract with the Sonics last year.

Maxwell is accused of assaulting a woman in her Charlotte home, according to a warrant seeking his arrest.

Heidi Hayden, 31, told police she was punched and kicked several times in her home just after midnight Saturday. Hayden sustained bruises and scratches and refused treatment, a police report says.

Maxwell, 34, has been in trouble with the law and the NBA in the past. Maxwell, who has a Charlotte address, spent about two months with the Hornets in 1998 before serving a 90-day jail sentence for a 1995 mar1juana possession conviction in Houston.

Maxwell also was suspended for 10 games without pay and fined $20,000 in 1995 for going into the stands and punching a fan who had been heckling him at a game in Portland.

The relationship, if any, between Maxwell and Hayden is unclear. Maxwell and his wife, have three children, according to the Sonics' Web site.
