I haven't seen the Rockets use the zone defense yet and I'm wondering, will they? The reason that the T-Wolves are undefeated is because they are use the zone in certain situations. I was thinking that if the Rockets had used the zone against the Wolves and Hawks, then maybe their power forwards wouldn't have had those great games. Just my opinion.
Every game they use it. They drift a player into the lane to stop the drive, it is a kind of ameba(sp?) like zone. DaDakota
I've seen it against Phoenix, 4th Quarter to stop Hardaway, otherwise no. (I have that on tape, but haven't watched it yet.) Dropping someone into the lane is not a zone...it is merely dropping someone into the lane.
I would love for the Rockets to use a zone on Thu against Philly. They don't have the shooters to make you pay. And of course the zone could help slow down Iverson.
Crispee it is not a ZONE defense, but it is a player playing a ZONE position. You are picking nits. DaDakota
Nope...not at all DaDakota. I know the media likes to say that Seattle played zone against the Rockets in 1993...but that wasn't "zone," that was illegal defense for playing a "zone"! Much of the media is confusing real "Zone" with previous "Illegal Defense." Illegal Defense is not a Zone Defense, necessarily...and it has nothing to do with college zone defenses. Explain to me what an NBA rotation defense is, then I'll explain why that is different than UNLV's Ameoba Zone, to which you are referring.
No...no...no... I am not saying it is an ameoba zone at all, I know what a pure zone defense is, however, when Cato leaves his man and goes into the lane to stop penetration from the weak side, and plays an area, he is in effect playing a zone. The Rockets are not playing the box and 1, the 2-3, the 1-2-2, the 3-2 etc..etc...but they are utilizing the new rules to their advantage. You know what I don't get though is that they wanted to eliminate the illegal defense call, and it is STILL there. I have seen it called in every game so far. I think the only benefit of the new rules is that teams are going to share the ball, but scoring is NOT going to go up. DaDakota
And I am saying that when Cato leaves his man he can simply be playing Rotation Man-on-Man defense. Really, the pudding of zone is proved only by when a man cuts through the zone and you don't follow him. imo, what we are seeing is the glory of man on man without the restrictions of Illegal Defense rule. That does not mean we are playing Zone.
That's the big myth about the new rules...They WEREN'T created to increase scoring. Scoring is down because players can't shoot as well as they used to, plain and simple. Everything is either a dunk or a three point attempt. No mid-range game at all anymore... The new rules were created to stop the one-on-one play that has seemed to run rampant everywhere. Also, the defensive 3 second rule is easier to interpret and enforce. Refs don't have to watch every player on the court anymore, they just have to watch the painted area and start counting... One Mississippi Two Mississippi Three Mississippi
Crispee, He is not leaving to double another man, he is leaving to guard a SPOT on the floor, the threat of a double, that is all, it is a type of zone defense. If he actually DOUBLES his man it is the same as before, but if he stands there, guarding NO ONE but the basket, it is a type of zone. DaDakota
This is going to sound ignorant, but there are still illegal defense calls? I thought the whistles were now for "defensive 3 seconds in the lane", or something like that.
