Seems to me with all their ballyhoo last summer with Hill and TMac it was just the sizzle without the sausage.

Sure they got a nice draft pick in Mike Miller but they shouldnt have done their deals with the Clips and they definately should have taken Marcus Fizer for Mike Miller when it may have been on offer.

The reason I say these things is because they are a seriously unbalanced squad (they are addressing this though) that will continue to have problems with depth by trying to commit another max player or close to max player in their squad.

Here is what seems apparent to me . In today's CBA and for squads constructing from anew in the last year or two and starting from the ground up ANY SQUAD CAN ONLY HAVE TWO MAX PLAYERS without seriously compromising depth and the need for valuable role players.

The Magic are learning this the hard way and committed their dough ( foolishly ) I believe to two perimeter players. Hindsight is 20 20 but it would haev made far more sense to develop Corey Maggette and Keyon Dooling with TMac . Swapped Miller for Fizer when they had the chance and then position themselves for a major run ( easily too I might add ) for CWebb or Antonio this year , or , if they thought it more prudent for TD or the like in 2 years.

The thing about developing your own talent in house is that you can go over the CAP and sign them if you choose to bigger salaries - perhaps max salaries if so warranted , when their rookie contracts mature , and if you have been smart with your free agent signings in that period when your rooks were on contract and you added the right pieces, then fine and dandy if you want to go over the CAP and sign your rooks to a big payday when the time is right.

But now coming to the realisation that AD will wipe them out of depth and that Bo Outlaw doesnt have the market that their egos were telling them that he had ,they will be just as screwed in 2 years from now in trying to clear enough room to sign a marquee MAX style of player because the experience they have had now with AD willbe played out all over again.

What they then are constrained to is running a semi retirement home for Pat and Ho and the like which is a serious way down for what they had every good chance of looking like over the next season too.

Perhaps CWebb and TMac/GHill with Dooling , Maggette, Fizer and Ben Wallace with the other role players like Harpring , Garrity etc - Or sub TD's name for Cwebb when the time approached.

But Hill and TMac together and the "inability" to now deal Mike Miller - not their "refusal" has pretty well limited their capacities off their own efforts to get better by providing experienced vet muscle up front to balance them up.

Excellent analysis of the Orlando Magic, FJ. Its likely that the Magic have peaked as an organization. If Grant Hill regains his health he may help them reach 50 wins. But it sure looks like they're doomed to become the Suns of the East for a long, long time. And if Hill fails to return to form the Magic will struggle to make the playoffs each year.

While its still too early to tell, hindsight suggests that they may have been better off signing T-Mac, and then spread some of Hill's money around for a more solid core of role players. And their cap problems are just beginning. They still have to take care of Meech, who sacrificed a ring and $17 million to play for a paltry $600,000. The Magic are truly in a box. Almost $180 million committed long term to two players, one of whom is still recovering from a serious injury...a bad stadium that can't generate enough revenue to help them pay the bills...a truly apathetic fan base...and a collection of journeymen players, some of whom are or soon will be grossly overpaid. On the asset side of the ledger, they've got the services of one of the brightest stars in the league locked up for the next six years...or do they? If Gabriel isn't able to make the Magic into a better ballclub each year, I wonder how long it will be before Mr. McGrady grows restless and realizes that playing in Florida doesn't mean much if you can't get past the first round of the playoffs each year.
