Putting all the May Day stuff aside (they do have valid points, you know), I *love* that they're called the Wombles! :)

(By the way, I think 'Euro' is one of the world's most irritating terms. A bit like 'Yank'. Blurgh.)

Care to elaborate how "SKINHEADS MARCH IN SUPPORT OF LE PEN" has valid points?

Man I've been away from this place too long!

    BTW! HaPpY BiRtHdAy Max!

Madmax, I bet it just chapes your know what that the Euros have access to free medical care.

Oh those wicked Euros! They don't talk about Christian Charity or go to church much. They just tax themselves to give health care to everyone. Meanwhile the Christian church going voters of the USA who do have health insurance can't find it in their Christian hearts to take care of the uninsured.

And for all that, it's still safer to live in England...

Pretty funny stuff. Euro's 'universal health care' is a myth those of you with socialist leanings like to spout off about. Try going to a hospital to get treated. For anything less than a heart attack you'd be lucky to see a doctor in the your first 24 hours in the emergency room. For any kind of procedure, your wait could be a year or more. And I'm not exaggerrating. Even the press here writes daily about their 'crumbling health care system.'

I'll take the healthcare in the good ol US of A anyday.

    And what's wrong with 'Yank?'

glynch -- i can't believe i'm even going to dignify what you posted above...but what the hell did either of the two links I posted have ANYTHING to do with health care. I was merely posting articles which accentuate the two political extremes in Europe. Yes, we have our own skinheads here...yes, we have the Communist Party of America here...but neither receives near the vocal support that we see from those in Europe supporting either/both extreme. If you'd read my past posts here I've indicated before that I am troubled by the fact that there are people in the USA who can't get medical treatment...that sincerely bothers me. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I hope there's one better than the typical "socialized medicine" alternatives we see in Europe. Also...you tend to imply that Americans are, by definition, Christians...and that American voting patterns reflect poorly on that faith. I would not say America is a Christian nation...believe me...I would NOT say that. I'm truly baffled as to why you even posted at all on this link, other than to poke at my faith, which it seems you've done before.

was it safer during WWII when people like Le Pen were in control??? how safe was it in Eastern Europe when Milosevic was running around??

was it safer when Stalin was in control in the Soviet Union???

was it safer when WWI was raging???

is it safer to attend a sporting event in the US or Europe??

This stereotype of what happens in Europe is what happens to the uninsured in Houston.

I know it is not within your experience, Hayestreet as you pursue investment banking or whatever but, if you're ever in Houston, Go to Ben Taub and the other charity hospitals and see what goes on. My wife worked as a nurse there and I personally deal every day of the week with people who go there.

Now for a personal story. In Italy while on the beach, my son stepped on some sort of spiny animal in his bare feet. He got probably 20- to 30 spines stuck in his foor that broke off. As tourists we went to the er. While my wife, a nurse watched, he was taken into an operating like room, sterile procedure was used and for about 45 minutes a medical worker of some kind picked the spines out one by one. No charge, no bill, no paperwork.

Madmax, quit trying to pretend that you are just innocently commenting on European politics. You are pushing your conservative world view. Conservatives hate Europe as it shows that you can have democracy and such benefits as universal health care and free college education.

For your info. Dick Armey was on Hardball last night. He called for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from the West Bank. They should be moved to another land. This is extremism, too.

Why not start a thread about extremists in the USA and categorize the whole country as extremist? Just for balance.

Seattle WTO protest - very big protest, had "anarchists" involved, as well.

L.A. Pres. Convention Protest outside of Staples - again, big, "anarchists" involved, etc.

KKK, Aryian Nation, and Skinheads march all of the time in the US.

Less threatening, far-right conservatives (who would often be considered with the fascist parties in Europe) often gain a great deal of support here, as well.

Everybody has extremists, I don't see why you think Europe is so unique.

Incidentally, your first post was flawed. Thatcher made incorrect historical and political statements about mainland Europe...but one of your examples came from the UK. If anything, the London demonstration hurts her statements.

glynch -- thanks for telling me what my motives are!!! again...both of these threads were on Euro politics...that's it. That's the extent of it...and it's made plain when I posted the reference to Thatcher who claimed that the world's worst political evils all come from Europe.

I do not HATE Europe!!! But I also don't think it's the utopia you and other socialists make it out to be. I suppose that point could be illustrated above. My culture is not their culture...and I think the "well, they're just laughing at us in Europe" statements are ridiculous.

Again...I didn't say that there weren't extremists in the US. But comparing Dick Armey (who, by the way, I didn't see last night on Hardball, so I really can't comment too far) to men like Le Pen is a far stretch. I don't normally see skinheads marching in support of Armey. I'm not saying all of Europe is extremist...just saying they have a louder political voice in Europe than they do in the US. History affirms that, as well.

Your points were directed to me personally as a Christian...your post to another political conservative on this board would have appeared radically different from the one you posted to me. And of course you fail to acknowledge that the characterizations you made about me are incorrect, even after I tried to clear up your misconception.

our extremists aren't legitimate political contenders...they're not serious threats to run the country. Tom DeLay is far right here... He's not Le Pen.

My point about Thatcher is made in my post to glynch.

we don't have a history of bowing to communism nor fascism.

You're right about the Christian remark. Must admit conservative Christians, who don't give a dman about the poor (you are not one with your volunteer work) do bug me a lot as I was raised as a Christian to help the needy and still do with my present job.

As to your motives and perceptions, you must admit that the title of your post was inflammatory. As to whether LePen and Dick Armey with his ethnic lceansing are that far apart. We can disagree on this.

I think Pat Buchanan is a pretty good American match for Le Pen. He's FAR right and he has a pretty strong anti-immigration stance. He was a contender in the last presidential election. Granted, he didn't get as far as Le Pen, but I think that has less to do with France's political leanings and more to do with the way their election system is set up.

I think it's a little bit silly to pick two incidences of radical behavior and then generalize and say "I am glad I am not a Euro". rimbaud already pointed it out nicely in his response.

Of course there are radical and extremist people everywhere in the world. Health systems are very different within Europe, even comparing England and Germany.

My point is mainly that I don't really understand what the point of the initial post was :).

giddyup, of course he didn't use the word "cleansing"-- just that they should be moved to an unspecified country. When Matthews suggested do you mean "Norway", Armey laughed and didn't respond concretely, just that there are Arab countries with a lot of land.

This is called "cleansing" in Yugoslavia. Same concept here. I think we can assume that the Palestinians don't intend to abandon the West bank voluntarily.

Armey's response seemed to have floored Matthews, who finally asked Armey if he had thought this out and didn't he know how against Bush's and every other president's his position was. Armey responded that he had thought it out and he guessed that as of this programBush would now know Armey's position.

As Mrs. JB says we have Buchanan, David Duke and the far right of the Republican Party who are not that different from LePen.
