I don't usually post stuff like this but this piece and message is very timely. I'm Gen X and I see the current Finance / Crypto Bros as just the latest generation of financial scammers like the Boiler Room Wolf of Wall Street types in the 90's and going back to the get rich con artists that Mark Twain was writing about. The tools though have changed and Minhaj is correct that social media has opened up a whole new avenue for cons while in the meantime there is so much information out there that con artists can get more invasive and harder to avoid. It's also not just poeple in their 20's getting suckered into their schemes but older people looking to get rich before the retire are also putting their savings up to these schemes.

My own view has been to never trust anyone who cold calls or contacts unsolicited through email or social media. Anyone who yells alot and tries to sell you on their lifestyle shouldn't be trusted. And for men anyone who tries to play on male insecurity should never be trusted. That was how guys like Jordan Belfort (Wolf of Wall Street) conned so many and other than the terms they use not much difference between him and the current generation.

It looks like the video can't be shared but highly recommend it and can be found on YouTube for the Daily Show.

    It’s not just crypto/finance bros…. It’s pretty much everywhere

For example, because Covid a bunch of phony baloney medical treatments , supplements, etc flooded social media.

Yes. Here in Minnesota there was a recent case of several people scamming COVID relief funds. As a small business owner I also get a lot of calls and emails to take advantage of new COVID policies to get new financing.

There's a line between a scammer and someone who is just irresponsible, but the end result is the same, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Except that we’re talking about people who in many cases are looking to exploit people with incomplete and/or misleading information. Yes people should be careful with their money but that also doesnt mean that scammers are somehow agents of karma.

Yep, quack remedies (Dr Oz damn near became a Senator), ponzi schemes and MLM's have always been and always will be. Because of human nature.

I can't think of a worse place to get financial advice than from social media.

I'm just curious how the grifters are dipshits if they're scamming 'you'. Wouldn't that make 'you' the dipshit?

Just found out that one of my elderly relatives got scammed with a boiler room type
Scam focussing on elderly mandarin speakers. I don’t know all the details but supposedly they spoofed an actual economist from Taiwan and their sales pitch was geared towards emphasizing Confucian values.

Scammers are worldwide in all culture and languages. The worst are those who prey upon the elderly. For those of us with aging parents, uncles and aunts keep an eye out.
