There are not many Chinese people in the media or sports and Yao is clearly become the most popular. We are truly fortunate to have a player like him be part of our organization. I think for the most part, many on this site do not know many Chinese people nor their cultures.

Has Yao changed your perception of Chinese people? If so, how?

Yes. I am much more aware of Asians in sport and I supported China in the olympics. Neither of which I would have pursued without Yao. In general, I am becoMING more knowledgeable about the culture.

well.....I have certainly learned alot about Chinese people that you dont learn from school or the media.

I didnt really have a bad impression of them in the first place...so it isnt a matter of changing how I feel about them. Just a matter of learning about a society that is different fom the one I live in.

gotta admit...Im damn thankful that they(the government) allowed Yao to come over to the NBA...and that we were lucky enough to get the first pick, Much to the rest of the league's chagrin. ;)

btw....I think this would be better suited to the Hangout...but it is kinda a grey area since your question pertains to how feelings have changed cause of Yao.

    Not at all.

I find the Chinese people to be very respectful and shrewd business people.

Of course those are generalities, but nevertheless, still good folks.

Not so much the people but the country.
I did not realize how advanced (in term of technology and eco. development ...) China itself has become until after I looked at pictures of Shang Hai ...

I knew Hong Kong, Taiwan were pretty advanced but I thought China was still backward.

    I am not a racist. :p

Yao Ming is one Chinese person. You can't judge a billion people by what one does. If a [insert ethnic group here] person cuts me off in traffic, i don't ascribe that behavior to the entire race. And if a girl in a bar rejects me, I don't hate all women for it either.

Am I missing the point of this thread?

He hasn't changed my opinion of Chinese. Most of my friends growing up were black, hispanic, chinese, vietnamese, and filipino. I also work with quite a few Chinese people so I've talked to them a bit about their culture before.

The only thing I wasn't expecting from Yao was his sense of humor.

I think so. One person can educate many about the ways of their culture. I'm willing to bet that before Yao Ming, not many people knew about surname placement in Yao's name - that's culture.

My view of Chinese people hasn't changed. I'm positive about *all* races. As DoD said, I have friends that are "black, hispanic, chinese, vietnamese, and filipino." Same here.

But what I'm interested in is, if Chinese people feel that Yao has made them feel better about themselves (in the media, being acepted by American pop-culture, etc...)?

I mean, it's probably pretty obvious. Yao has turned into a cultural role model for many Chinese (and millions of kids around the world as well).

Hopefully they like him because he's a good person. And that's should be the main reason.

    Yes.

Ming Yao has opened my eyes the warmer side of the Chinese people and culture. Before now it was just Bruce Lee and Kung Fu. And noddles and the vast population. I did not even know a Chinese could be that tall.

I don't think he means just Yao Ming changing your views into all Chinese people but helping to understand the culture more...

Say, for example, you read Yao's book which has much to say about the cultural, economic, political differences betweem the US and China... or a common question when Yao Ming was drafted was

"So, which is his first name, and which is his last?"

People soon found out why Yao is his "last name" (family name)and why it is mentioned before his actual "first name"

People began to understand little nuances... like the debunked rumour into why Yao didn't dunk the ball (it was considered rude in China)

Thats what I think he meant

Chinese ppl are actually really tall in general. Its the southeast asians that tend to be shorter.
