Watching Biggio bat for the last 2 months has been mind numbing. He can hit the pitch on the inner half of the plate, but anything on the outer half and he goes fishing without any bait. The guy just can not hit the outer half strike, and is incredibly vulnerable to the slider on the outside corner. I want him to get his 3000th hit in an Astros Uniform but the way he is swinging the bat, maybe he won't get there. Do you guys think it is a slump, or this is the end? DD
He's not ever gonna be pigpen circa 1999. But probably with an offseason to rest a little, he can return to form to the extent he doesn't embarass himself. I think we need to make it clear when we sign him that after he gets hit #3000...he has to be willing to accept a reduced role.
I agree 100%, and I hope you are right, but he needs 84 hits, right? He might not be able to get that many hits next year, if this is the level he is going to play at from now on. DD
This is exactly what I am afraid of, that Biggio has simply lost it.....maybe it is mental, maybe it is simply the end. He may not get to 3000......I would have figured he was 70 hits or so away at the end of the year, but if he is still 80 or more...that may be too high a mountain to climb as a part time player. Zero for his last 23.....0-23...ouch. DD
This is one time I agree with you DaDakota. Hopefully Biggio will start strong next season and scrounge out 80+ hits. I'm not saying he won't make it but I'm having doubts.
It sure fell apart quickly for Schmidt. At age 37/38 he was still a great player. .293/35hr/113rbi. The following season .249/12hr. Yet, he still comes back for another season and he skirts the Mendoza line. I really hope that doesn't happen to Biggio.
Biegge needs to call up Bonds in the offseason, see if they can hang out together...*shifty eyes. And i meant just hanging out, you know: go to the movies, talk about current issues and stuff over coffee. I was not referring or even thinking about Bonds and his injecting steroids in his anus, yes directly into his anus.
Many people thought Biggio was done a few years ago, but then he eliminated the little high step in his stance and bounced back nicely. I'm not saying it's as simple as that, but I think an offseason to retool and recharge will do wonder's for him. He had a horrid second half to downplay a pretty good first half. He's still got some left in the tank and the Astros owe it to him to at least try for 3000. Obviously though, if his quest starts to hurt the team, then changes should be made. But I don't think we're there yet, so let's what the offseason does for him.
In the last few years, his late season drop off has been more and more pronounced. I believe this points to the fact that he can't take the daily grind anymore, but if he was in a bench/utility roll, that he could still be a productive player. My hope is that he rests up over the summer, playes decently in the first half of next year and gets his 3000, then basically is a utility player for the rest of the year when the inevitable late year drop off begins. And heck...if the Astros are pretty much done this year...lead him off to get him and extra AB a game so he can get as close to 3000 as possible this year so he doesn't have as far to go next year.
To me, Bidge is Mr. Astro. But does he mean more to the Astros then Hakeem meant to the Rockets? Dream didn't know when his time was up, and so the Rockets had to let him walk. This may be the same scenario with Biggio and the Astros.
so is he a free agent this summer? i wonder , how much do you think the owner should pay him for 1 year, that might just be terrible? is it worth it to sacrifice enhancing the team just to see Bidge get 3000? but i dont think any team wants him do you? I dont see the yankees or cards wanting a player batting .200..but if he stays healthy he SHOULD get 3000 but Im not holding my breath
I don't think the game has necessarily passed him by (not also sure if that's the appropriate cliche), but it is obvious that Biggio isn't a full-time player anymore. I think he can still contribute, especially towards the beginning of the season. Let's wait and see what he does at the beginning of 2007 before we write him off.
He's a free agent this year, but only payed $4 million. As for the Yankees, remember Bernie Williams?
The trend over the last few years is obvious. Bidge is an all-star for the first two months, then tails off from there. I would have Bidge be the everyday starter until his numbers dictate a change. Burke can share time with Everett and rest Bidge until he replaces Bidge for good in the second half.
He'll be back...He's just given up like the rest of the Stros... I'll were my Biggio jersey loud and proud next year when he gets his 3000th hit...
These poll threads always crack me up, when someone asks a question in the title and the actual poll question is the opposite. It's like starting a thread entitled, "Do you like peanut butter?" and the poll answers are "YES" and "NO" ... then you look at the actual poll question and it says, "Do you hate peanut butter?"
I know I realized I made that mistake after I started the poll. The main point is relatively the same, but I would not doubt that the poll numbers are skewed because of the juxtaposition of the question. Sorry Clutch, my bad. DD
