Like almost everyone here, for the past few months I've been screaming at my TV every time Ryno passes up what appears to be a decent 3-pt attempt, giving the ball to a teammate instead. I was certain he was shooting fewer 3s and had become gunshy about shooting when he wasn't wide open. Looks like all of us who thought that were wrong. His 3pt attempts per minute have actually gone UP (1 shot per 5.75 minutes in Dec/Jan vs 1 shot per 5.15 minutes in Feb/Mar/Apr). He's not actually shooting less; it just seems that way because he's playing fewer minutes. What has definitely changed is that he's making more of those attempts. In December and January, he was hitting his 3s at a 29% clip, horrible by his standards. Since the beginning of February, he's been absolutely drilling them -- 45%. That's a huge difference. (Only Darren Collison is hitting a better percentage for this year.) So Anderson is shooting 3s more often and making them much more often. Going forward, we really should be giving him more minutes. TL;DR: Since February, Ryno is attempting more threes per minute of playing time and hitting 45% of them.
Anderson going to the bench was a good move. He plays against 2nd unit guys that are slower to close out on shots. Further, he is playing some at C so they are even slower to close out. Anderson does better when he has more room to shoot. He isn't as good when he is crowded on his shot. Unlike Harden who actually looks like he enjoys being crowded or invites it.
Chris Paul and Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon, Gerald Green all will space the Floor, when James Harden comes back into the game he can get to basket easier.
Yup he’s been hesitant for a good couple of games, combination of bad shooting periods paired with coming off the bench and injury. He definitely needs to let it fly!
What I love most about Gerald is that he's absolutely fearless. What scares me most about Gerald is that he's absolutely fearless.
I'm sure he will if he can stay healthy. He's our best shooter from behind the arc, and that can't be ignored.
These numbers completely shock me. I had the same mistaken impression. This kind of smart, surprising analysis is one of the best things about this forum. I bow to you, sir.
This is exactly the kind of raw impression that puts people like us at a disadvantage against an analytical guy like Daryl Morey. I guess when we see a player shooting a lot and making some 3's, we remember the makes -- and when he plays less, we see fewer makes so what we remember are the misses and the shots passed up. Or something like that. Some kind of bias in what we notice or remember must account for our surprise at the numbers.
This is why it's a luxury for D'Antoni to have Gordon, Johnson, Anderson, Green, Moute, and Tucker on the bench. Let them be fearless, and swap them out when they cause you fear.
He had awful slump that left burn marks on our brains. He was certainly gunshy during that slump. We all saw it. But that leave such an impression that even when he got out of the slump, every shot he didn't take seemed like part of the same pattern.
Like many others, it didn't pass the eye test because we don't see him playing as much. Good analysis - would read again
I had not been screaming for him to take more shots. I thought that he had found his niche on the team to at least be a productive rotation player.
