Let's set the stage here. Nuggets and Jazz, tied at 96 in the Delta Center. John Stockton just missed a shot that would've won it and Denver got the rebound, giving them one second left on the clock. They call a timeout and can advance it to halfcourt. They either win with a buzzer beater or go to overtime right? WRONG. Nick Van Exel takes a TIMEOUT when he has none left (can you say Chris Webber?), and gives the Jazz a technical to win the game. Furthermore, just in case Stockton missed the free throw, Nick decided to insure the win by arguing and getting thrown out, granting Utah another free throw. Remember when people were questioning his intelligence after what he said about the Rockets? Jokes on Nick now. [IMG]

Wow, that's an amazing mental lapse. The worst thing about it is that it allowed Utah to win the game.

While Van Exel screwed up, it's not 100% his fault. The scoreboard operator at the Delta Center had it so the Nuggets still had one timeout left. The team should have clarified it, but to blame this all on NVE is BS.

    I'm in absolute shock still.

The Chronicle says one ref nearest Nick turned away from Nick not willing to settle a game like that on a Webber technical. He refused to call it and let the time expire. However, the boneheaded ref from across the court came in and called the timeout. Thus, they had to settle it with a technical.

I am amazed the first ref just turned away basically giving Van Exel a second chance. But Van Exel slammed the ball to the ground when he didn't get his timeout.

Also, the Chron has a quote from Lucas saying they new the scoreboard was wrong and the team discussed it. He actually blames the game on himself.

Hey, whatever, this helps us. A Denver loss is a Denver loss, I don't care why or how or to who.
