I just cant think of a time when mainstream radio rock has ever been worse. I cant listen. I really cant. I turn the channel because everything is so bland and so completely unoriginal.

The music industry is churning out garbage right now, and people still buy this ****..... (Nickelback is the absolute worst). They are radio whores.....

    We need another Nirvana.......

I like the formurock, it's less scary for me and my parents. NICKLEBACK RULZ.

/NIN kicked so much ass last nite, I'm still floating even with too little sleep.

What about the late 80s? Was it great back then?

I think I've spent about two years of my life where I actually listened to music on free radio. The rest of the time it's been CDs and XM for me.

95% of the songs on the buzz are either Greenday, Nickleback, or a song that was popular when I was in high school, 8 years ago.

The late 80's was pretty bad too, but I thought there was at least a little more originality back then - plus the bands had more talented musicians.

Man that is so true. I swear every time I turn on the buzz (a rare thing) I hear Pearl Jam. And not knew stuff - the same hits from "10".

My favorite though, switching through stations like the buzz, mix, and hearing the same songs being played at the same time.

    Thanks god for my ipod.

It's funny you use Nirvana when comparing it to things that are unoriginal. "Come as You Are" is a ripoff of Killing Joke's song "Eighties", and Cobain in Rolling Stone said that Nirvana were just trying to be like the Pixies. It's all just how you look at it, I guess.

I listen to podcasts of Penn Jillette's show and that's the only radio I listen to anymore. If I ever get XM or Sirius, I might listen more. I'm happy with mp3s on random these days.

Yeah but what if you do if you are too broke to pay $$$ for songs, but you still want to listen to good music??? I cant afford XM, and I barely download mp3's because of the cost. The only thing I can do is listen to what friends recommend or check out band websites. I love music, but just cant afford it these days....

I think Im stuck in music hell......

    :(

Good point. I never realized how much the Pixies influenced other bands until I recently got into them. They really did pioneer the grunge/alt. (whatever you wanna call it) sound, but Nirvana is the band that turned the world on fire. Cobain was a great songwriter.

Alt-Rock went down after grunge faded away. Now there are just a bunch of bands that are knock offs of each other. Is there really a difference from Simple Plan, New Found Glory, and Fall Out Boy?

I'm just glad I got over New rock a while ago. I stick to classic Rock and indie music.

If I was stuck in music hell, I would download free music. You can't go to a worse place than hell. Right?

    Two things...

First, you're getting old. The exact same things were said about every generarion of rock music ever produced. Older people were complaining about the Beatles and then George Harrison complained about Rap music.

Second... you're right! Most of the music that you hear on the radion today is not terribly original. Could bands like Led Zepplin, Rush, Queen or the Who make it today? Those bands songs were all over the place stylistically. Today most bands are pigeon-holed into a particular sound.

I'm not saying all bands are like this at all. There are probably TONS of bands making great music. The problem is you don't hear them on the radio.

And the Pixies were 90% a rip off of Husker Du who were equal parts...

You can make those chains forever (in music, movies, other art, etc.), but what bands do with the influences is what creates quality.

As for now, mainstream should be pretty much a dead term. There are so many easily available alternative channels for music that no one has to settle for just what the radio or MTV forces down their throat if they don't want to. Yes, radio and TV are horribly unoriginal and vapid, but the consumers of that product want something safe. If you don't want that, you can sample thousands of bands for free on hundreds of websites, you can read about a band in any number of "underground" magazines available at chain book stores (ex., The Big Takeover is a brilliant magazine that covers hundreds of non-top 40 bands and is available at a lot of Barnes and Nobles), or you can just check out what your friend has on his/her Ipod. So many easy options that weren't necessarily there even 5-10 years ago.

Mainstream rock radio has been consistently bad since the late 1970s, and it ain't gonna get any better.

I'm a big Husker Du fan and this statement is a gross exageration.
