I was watching League Pass, and Jim Peterson, who was doing the Minny broadcast, said Chuck seemed to have gained a lot of weight, and that he was much more cut last season than he is now. Then the broadcasters proceeded to laugh about the fact that Chuck was officially listed at 238 lbs. I believe Artest mentioning Chuck was at 260 lbs in preseason. Has Hayes gained too much weight? He does appear somewhat less effective of late. I am thinking it may be that, due to Mutombo's absence, Chuck tried to get heavier to play C. I don't think it works all that well for him.
He's definitely gotten less quicker...that's let his defense slide a bit. He does okay against the bulkier PF/Cs out there, but quicker PFs are giving him hell this season. I remember Hakim Warrick was tearing him up...literally jab stepping and then just driving around him for the quick flush or the lay-in.
he does look a little bigger. that might take out some of his speed. he's been less effective than last season in D.
Hayes for Moore! Make it done. JK Hayes is a pimp. I don't know why people are always so quick to criticize the guy.
I love the Chuckwagon, but he has definitely put on some weight since last season. As someone else stated, he has lost a few steps on defense in terms of sticking with quicker bigs. However, I still think he is a formidable option to go to whenever the Rockets are in need of stopping those bigger PFs. I was recently watching ESPN in the wee hours of the morning, and it was one of those old high school dunk contests. Chuck was in it, with his Kentucky jersey on, and he looked like a different person. He was pretty lean and muscular back then. And then there's this picture where it looks like he's about to rip the ball away and David Lee's arm off in the process:
def looks a lot heavier, and his D has dramatically slipped. Can't rely on him to get stops anymore. He was effective against the Al JEfferson's and even Pau Gasol's a few yrs ago. Like someone pointed out before, a mediocre player like Warrick absolutely owned Chuck, and i think he is really struggling this yr
if you look at all the subway's advertisements they usually post the nutrition facts for 6" sub, but grown men usually ordered foot-long subs. and a foot-long sub has almost as much calorie as a big mac
don't we need him to be a little bigger to play the 5? he lost a little speed, but gained more strength and his legs are like trees. he shoulda played football, he'd be hell of a linebacker.
I dont think you can make him heavy enough to gaurd 5s, he just needs to be taller (which physically cant happen). If anything, he needs to get stronger. Drop 30 lbs of fat, put on 15 of muscle.
I hope this isn't a knee jerk reaction to Jefferson hitting fire and maturing a bit. Jefferson was expected to get a whole lot better. and he just got better in front of Chuck Hayes.
Chuck is the same player and the same weight as last season. This is another knee jerk reaction thread based on one game (or a few plays).
I think he had no choice but to put on pounds. He has no shooting ability. He's formed his body into what would keep him in the league. Which is pretty much a brick wall... That can rebound.
He needs the weight to back up Yao. It was sad that Jefferson just shot over Hayes once he found out he couldn't over power or drive on him. I want Deke!
well said, and hayes was supposed to be one of the best post defenders in the league, but got dominated tonight, if your opponent has a 6 inch advantage over you, it's difficult no matter how good you are. that's like brooks trying to guard kobe.
