An article from my local news station about a play my law school is putting on: http://www.news4jax.com/entertainment/10948346/detail.html I mean, seriously, a woman offended by the word vagina?! It's a g*ddamn part of your body! It's only slightly more offensive than the word "elbow".
That is ridiculous and irks me to no end! First of all hooha is not a replacement. The name "Vagina Monologues" has a rythm to it. hooha destroys that. Writers choose words for a reason, and it is beyond belief that some know-nothing would have to alter that. Beyond that Vagina is a medical term, and isn't a cuss word anyway. It is censorship, and it needs to stop.
You know what has gone too far is people always accusing something of being PC when they have little to no idea what PC supposedly is. First of all, I'm of the opinion there is no "PC movement." Political Correctness is just a term that was made up to take the attention away from issues about discrimination etc. Anyways, the woman here was mad that her young niece saw the word vagina. That is characterestic with somebody who is a social conservative and usually not PC.
But why would the theater comply with a complaint from one woman? I don't think the woman was being "PC" in any way, shape, or form. I'd also argue that this lady takes the term "social conservative" to a whole new level. I do, however, think the theater was trying to be slightly PC by changing the marquee to reflect the fact that one woman called to say she was offended by the word "Vagina". I can't say the theater is without a sense of humor and irony though. I'm not sure there is a more PC word for vagina than vagina and the theater changed the word to "hooha" which is about as far from being correct as you can get. If I was a student-actor in this play, who took time away from my law studies to prepare and perform in this play, I'd probably be very frustrated with the fact that potential customers and audience members could be lost because the advertisement does not accurately portray which play is being performed.
They should've changed it to the "p***y Monologues" so then that lady who complained could've told her neice it was a play about a talking cat.
[rquoter]"I'm on the phone and asked 'What did you tell her?' She's like, 'I'm offended I had to answer the question,'" Pfanenstiel said.[/rquoter] WTF. Why are you ashamed to explain to your niece what that part of that body is called? What's wrong with you, lady??? I would have gone to see it. Signed, Your resident cf.net Mexican.
the Roast Beef Chomp would have sufficed. i don't care if it's pc or not, you're a dumbass if you are offended by "vagina".
In my opinion, it isn't a question of whether PC has gone too far. It is a question of whether Americans suck at PC. Being "politically correct" is very important and shouldn't be marginalized. Where American's get into trouble is when non-affected/unrelated people attempt to apply PC to another group and inevitably gets it wrong. For example, the NCAA banning symbols of native americans. Let the native americans themsevles decide if they are offended. If they are ...then listen to them. If they didn't bring it up, why is the NCAA sticking their nose in it? Secondly, American's suck at PC because people don't bother to learn much about other people and are therefore insensitive to topics of which they know nothing about. It's hard to be PC if you are mostly clueless about the topic. For example, after 9/11 Americans had no idea idea about Muslims and openly made insensitive remarks on TV. We are now beginning to understand the culture more and don't make nearly as many blanket or misinformed statements as we used to. btw, the woman complaining about Vagina isn't a PC issue ...its a prude issue ...but clearly she's a sheltered person so I'm sure she makes plenty of PC mistakes.
That's exactly how I feel. People want to take isolated incidents like this and make it a news story. I'm not even sure why this is news. There are millions of people without healthcare, soldiers are dying everyday in Iraq, people are being murdered by the thousands in Darfur, and our society deems a law school play having to change the word vagina newsworthy?
BTW if anyone ever saw Kindergarten Cop, they would know why little kids (I'm assuming the niece was very young to not have heard the word before) sometimes don't need to know what a vagina or penis is. My 4th grade class couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes because the teacher was going over newspaper articles and one of the articles ahd the word "breast" in it. The next day someone had scratched that word into the stairway wall.
