What is the standard procedure. Someone at the office just got laid off. They apparently didn't even give this guy a warning.

To the best of my knowledge as long as less than a third of the workforce is laid off they don't have to. I've been fired, I know a lot about that, especially how if you work at Geek Squad you shouldn't only help the pretty girls, I almost learned that the hard way.

No procedure. Texas is an "at will employment" state, so they can terminate you at any time and vice versa. The difference is that some places do RIFs(reductions in force) humanely, and others will treat you like a piece of dog sheet even after years of faithful service. At Dell, for instance, I saw the following ways of doing layoffs:

    - Security guard waiting at the front door with a box of your personal belongings when you badge in in the morning. You come back at an assigned time later in the weak to pick up anything else under supervision by security.

    - Getting to your desk only to find your login doesn't work.

    - Leaving the people who were to be laid off from the invite list to the All Hands Meeting email request.

One year, 2001 I believe, the news guys were waiting out in the parking lot up in Round Rock trying to interview people who had just gotten their pink slips. Total BS.

never been. but probably will get laid off in the future soon or later.

previous job, the director pulled us in for a quick meeting. told us that the company will laid off a bunch of people before Christmas. none of us were getting laid off. i am not sure if those got laid off were informed or not though.

Hey, BestBuy practically made me an ultimatum that if I didn't quit college I'd be fired, they didn't say it in so many words, but they implied the hell out of it.

Oh well, I got a cute girl's number in process and didn't quit school, win win in my book.

One of my coworker she used to work at another company and they would give you 3 months minimum severance package+ 2 weeks for every year you worked there. I hear you get like 2 weeks at our company. I know a lot of people work more than than 8 hours a day and we don't get paid for it, and they just can you like that.

At Reliant, during the massive trading layoffs, they gave everyone a piece of paper with a room number on it.

Room #1 : You kept your job.
Room #2: We like you, your job is gone, here's your new job
    Room #3: You're fired.

This was repeated, scarily enough, through 2 rounds of layoffs.

Room #3 was in the Hyatt.

My company moved a whole 2-story building full of people to another small town in Texas where they could pay about half the salary rate we were making. We got 6 months notice, a fat package based on tenure, 2 weeks full salary for every year you had been with the company, and pretty much anyone - who wanted to - found jobs at other areas of the company.

Working for a very large company has it's upside.

Only problem was that, if you accepted an offer from another part of the company, you didn't get any of the benefits. It was tough deciding whether or not to take my (current) job and lose all that cash, but I decided job security was more important.

Some of my friends stayed to the end and got their packages. They've already blown through the cash and are now either looking for other jobs or working crap jobs that they hate. I have no regrets.

Sounds about right. I think the 2 weeks per year worked is fairly standard on top of what your company adds as far as severence.

We laid off about 15 people a few weeks back. We have since brought back about 8 of them, now that business is picking up.

My girlfriend got let go yesterday and so did everyone else working in that same position. Luckily for her, she gets 2 months pay. So I told her to take a vacation.

At my company, a member of upper management and a secuirty guard come to see you. You have the option of gathering your personal belongings then or calling later to schedule a visit to do so. Then they escort you off the property. No warning.
