My girlfriend is supposed to leave for Toronto tomorrow for a convention, but many of her colleagues have cancelled their trips because of an outbreak in the virus in that city. She had heard that 3 out of 4 hospitals had been shut down. Is this some wild hysteria, or is there real danger?

    Real danger.

People have died from it. I would err on the side of caution.

So, this would be a good time to make sure that our Toronto residents are OK.

Azim da Dream and Macbeth, y'all ok?

Well, if we did have experience with killer pneumomia, we probably wouldn't be alive to tell you about it. :D

My sister is currently in Laos and has been traveling in China and Vietnam. I don't think she even knows about the virus outbreak as she can't really read any of the papers! I hope she's okay...

I'm supposed to be in toronto late April. I'm a little concerned. A few Doctors I know up there have been quarantined. Scary. But the tickets have already been purchased. So as of right now I'm going. Hopefully they find a cure or the outbreak dies down. I know a lot of Doctors who are refusing to go. But a lot of other doctors are telling me that there's not much to worry about. I'd keep an eye on it. The West Niles scare had a lot of people worried. but nothing came of it. I heard only people over 40 could die from this killer flu. And i'm sure it's a low percentage of those people who do actually pass out of existence due to the virus. Keep an eye on it. Sometimes its better safe than sorry. We both have a tough decision.

Just keep in mind that more people have died in the world from the flu than SARS since the outbreak happened.

It is a concern, but people are going a little overboard because the chances of getting this are very slim.

How pissed would you be if you were

    (1) stuck on a plane with sick people
    (2) pretty sure you had been exposed to a potentially deadly virus that doesnt respond to antibiotics or antivirals
    (3) pretty sure you were about to spend at least 10-13 days in some sort of quarantined location

All of this after a 10 hour flight?

Sick or not, I'd want to kill the a-hole who dragged the bug onto the plane with them.

These SARS articles keep bringing "The Stand" to mind. May be time to read it again...great book.

Well, she decided to go and that was before the quarantined plane in California. I hope that it's not as bad as it sounds.
