Interesting read and summarises well the current position of the Rockets. That is, Kyle is a stud, the rest not so much.

<quote>KYLE LOWRY OVER EVERYTHING! In all seriousness, Lowry has been outstanding thus far for the Rockets with a PER hovering around 25 and a Usage Rate just under 24. The rest of Houston? Decidedly average. No one is really being overused or underused. No one is performing spectacularly well or poorly. It’s the epitome of the Rockets over the past few years: too good to get a high draft pick, not good enough to be a serious contender.<quote>

Stupid to do this so early in the season. Philadelphia and Utah have had joke schedules. Houston's has been among the toughest. New Jersey with their one win has many more positive PER players than we do. Maybe we're doing it with defense? Team stats don't seem to agree with that conclusion either.

According to the stats, we basically suck. But that ignores who we've played against so far.

Interesting article, thanks for posting it. I think this does a good job of showing which players are undervalued given their touches on the floor. It seems like Scola and Martin are hovering around the league average in terms of PER, but have a larger role in the offense than they should.

From the chart it would appear to me that the most valuable players on our team are Lowry, Dalembert, and Parsons, given their PER to usage ratio. The thing about this is that if you extrapolate and allow Dalembert and Parsons to have more touches in the offense, their PER to usage ratio will likely go down as they aren't nearly as efficient when they become the focal point of the defense.

I think what this does is essentially expose that our team has no star player that can create for himself outside of Lowry. Perhaps this is more reason to trade Scola and Martin while they have relatively high trade value.

Trading Scola and Martin will give more playing time to Patterson and Williams, which I think would be good for their development. The problem is that some of our younger guys don't get as much playing time (to help them develop) because they're behind veterans on our roster. I think it's pretty much universally agreed upon that what we have now isn't a championship roster. It's better to blow things up now, get some high value draft picks and rebuild from there. The sooner we do this and get through the pain, the faster we can reap the benefits.

There's nothing worse than being an average team in the NBA.

Williams isn't good. People need to accept that. 3 coaches have benched him.

True. We could give Morris his playing time instead.

Usage does not measure assists, if I remember correctly, only shot attempts, drawing shooting fouls and turnovers (which are things that tend to "end" a possession, thus "use it).

PER, no the other hand accounts for most of the main traditional statistical measures (Pts, Rebs, Asts, TOs, as well as well as scoring efficiency). So, you'll see a lot of PGs in the upper quadrants, and a lot of non-scoring big-time-rebounding C/PFs in the upper left quadrant.

People in the lower right quadrant are guys who are shooting often, but not very accurately (fpr example, the scoring accuracy for both Martin and Scola are down this year, putting them there so far).
