Free agent swingman Matt Harpring will return to the Utah Jazz, agreeing to a four-year, $25 million contract, sources told ESPN.

Harpring was fourth on the Jazz with a 12.5 points per game average in the 2005-06 season.

Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said re-signing Harpring was the club's top offseason priority, and coach Jerry Sloan loves Harpring's competitiveness and versatility.

Harpring sounded decidedly undecided about his future after Utah's season ended, saying he wanted to compete for a championship. After eight years in the league, he's never been to the second round of the playoffs.

4yr 25M. That looks like 4 years at full MLE? Good signing for the Jazz and at that contract he is still moveable if need be.

6.25M/yr. that would be just over MLE but Jazz are under the cap?

Probably not a cap space signing. Just an anomaly of similar values. Jazz had his full Bird Rights. It would not make since to renounce Harpring's BR's to dip slightly under the cap to re-sign him. In so doing, they would have lost their MLE.

Dang, I really like that guy and think he would be a great addition on the Rockets.

I've always liked him too, back to his Ga Tech days. Scrappy do everything guy in the Mario Elie mold. Weak range for a swingman, but nice scorer and rebounder. Good defense, but he's lost a couple steps. Honestly though, Battier is a better version of him. Don't tell any of the pitchfork and torch holding posters around here, though.

I think it is MLE type money. According to purplefever in another thread, he said the MLE will rise to 5.4 million. So with 10% raises it'll be:

    5.4 million
    5.94 million
    6.48 million
    7.02 million
    =
    4 years 24.84 million.

Rounded up to a flat 25 million. Not that they used their MLE. They have his Bird, and Early Bird rights so they probably just used the MLE as a baseline for his value.
