Today is yet another important day in Texas history. One-hundred and sixty-eight years ago this day, General Sam Houston and his rag-tag army of Texans defeated General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his Mexican army. "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" rang out as the Texans surprised the Mexicans and defeated them in only 18 minutes, although the slaughter continued for hours. More than 630 Mexican soldiers were killed and approximately 700 taken prisoner, including Santa Anna. This victory avenged the massacre of Texans at the Alamo on March 6, 1836 and the massacre at Goliad on March 27, 1836 and established the Republic of Texas, which ultimately led to Texas becoming the 28th State in the union in 1845, and finally to the inclusion of most of the west in the United States after the Mexican War in 1848. So, this was a BIG victory for Texas and for the United States. Happy San Jacinto Day!
It also paved the way for the San Jacinto monument...which ultimately paved the way for the Monument Inn restaurant...which happens to have some pretty good food! Way to go Texas!!!
Surprised this isn't getting more posts.. GO TEXAS! Afterall, if it wasn't for Sam Houston... we wouldn't be Houstonians
I try to visit the monument every coulpe of years. The food is good at the Inn. the place has an "old" feel to it.
When I was a kid, the Monument Inn had some of the tastiest fried chicken ever. Haven't been in 30 years. Might be time to check it out again!
Hey, let's give the Battleship Texas some love, too, that thing is a great part of the San Jac monument area. But yeah, Texas is dope.
yeah the battleship texas is pretty cool, although I haven't been to it in a long time. I went to a battleship in corpus christi a few years back that was pretty cool too.. not sure what it was called??
I was born in Texas, but grew up in Chicago and Miami. I'm so glad to be back in this awesome country we call Texas.
What is the Lexington doing in Corpus Christie Texas? You got the Texas at San Jac, I have been to battleship Alabama in Mobile Bay too. Seems like the Lexington should be in some Kentucky port city.
Yes, there was international support. There were US citizens in the Alamo as well as, I believe, Mexican nationals that lived in Texas. I remember being a kid and playing on the Texas . I remember playing with the AA guns on the deck. That stuff used to be fun. I think the next time I'm down that way I'm going to have to play on it again if they haven't disabled the guns. The guns on the ship in Sea Wolf Park were disabled. That sucked. I do remember going into the submarine though. I'm going to have to go back some day.
antisonic.. thanks.. I've been on the Battleship Texas, Lexington.. and I remember stopping at one as a young kid while driving from Houston to Disneyworld. I don't even know what state that was in though.
Probably the Alabama in Mobile Bay. It is a little bit bigger, later model of battleship than the Texas.
