On June 19 ("Juneteenth"), 1865, Union general Gordon Grangerqv read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, thus belatedly bringing about the freeing of 250,000 slaves in Texas. The tidings of freedom reached slaves gradually as individual plantation owners read the proclamation to their bondsmen over the months following the end of the war. The news elicited an array of personal celebrations, some of which have been described in The Slave Narratives of Texas (1974). The first broader celebrations of Juneteenth were used as political rallies and to teach freed African Americanqv about their voting rights. Within a short time, however, Juneteenth was marked by festivities throughout the state, some of which were organized by official Juneteenth committees.

I was surprised the other day to find out that Juneteenth is celebrated in many places outside of Texas.

I think I read something about how Juneteenth is the largest followed STATE holiday in the U.S.

Only Texas and OK celebrate it.

    You're welcome!

Seems like the way I'm celebrating Juneteenth this year is with my stomach!

Yesterday...lunch at This is It with my Manager...oxtails..mmmmm!

Today...Juneteenth special at the cafeteria in the building where I work....smothered pork chops.....mmmmmmmmm!

After work....yardwork to sweat it off.
Tomorrow morning....the gym to sweat it off!

PS: I miss the Juneteenth Blues Festival at Miller Outdoor Theatre!!!!:(

    Yes, I listen to Eminem...

I also listen to older Busta Rhymes, if that qualifies as 'trying to be with it' whatever 'it' is. Hopefully he is not covered in 'white chocolate', but that is a different issue.

I just thought 'Glorious Juneteenth' was a little over the top.

But honestly, it was just my opinion. Be happy. Love life.

    Thanks, smartass.

I thought 'Gracious Juneteenth' was a little bit over the top.

But like I said, it's just my opinion.

Also 'Juneteenth' sounds stupid. It's like that SNL Celebrity Jepeordy. 'Febturday!' 'She said turd!' 'Febtober'.

How about Freedom Day or Liberation Day.

Just my thoughts, nobody spaz out please.
