Can't wait to be back with the family for the weekend.... once I negotiate a way back from Phoenix after class today
Except Lunar new year is celebrated at different times in different cultures. In Judaism Rosh Hashanah is Lunar new year which is not celebrated at the same time as Chinese New Year. Also Tết in Vietnam comes from Chinese roots so it also is Chinese New year.
My daughter was born on Jan 20, which was the year of the Tiger...the same as me. She was 8 weeks early. Had she made it to her due date 3/13, she would have been born in the year of the rabbit...the same has her mother. I win.
I said "Gung Hay Fat Choy" to a rather large and obese African-American woman in my building today and almost got my ass kicked! True story.
Hey guys, I have a question. Why is it that Chinese New Year is celebrated by Asian people that aren't Chinese? For instance, I am friends with a guy at work who is Vietnamese, and he told me his family had big plans this weekend to celebrate Chinese New Year.
I can answer that question for you since my wife is Vietnamese. For thousands of years, China always claimed that Vietnam(used to be called AnNam) belong to China , so the Chinese tried everything to take Vietnam, notice I said TRIED because the Vietnamese are brave and patriotic fighters. They fought the Chinese at every chance even when they are outmanned and outgunned most of the time. The Chinese ocupied Vietnam for over a thousand years and that is why you see a lot of the Chinese customs and traditions in Vietnam and one of them is the celebration of the Chinese New year. P.S. Chi Com posters, don't go after me if you read the above facts, if you want to fight, let do it in the D&D.
I wouldn't exactly call that a great qualification lol, as the rest of your post shows. China just had a lot of influence over its neighboring countries for a very long time. Most large countries did. It's typical for people to only remember the bad stuff.
They aren't celebrating Chinese New Years, they're celebrating Vietnamese New Years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tết
Because it's not really 'Chinese' new year. It's Lunar new year and many Asian cultures celebrate it. (China being one of them) Lunar new year is bigger than China, bro. LOL
"But if the Chinese stay now, they will never go. As for me, I prefer to sniff French sh!! for five years than to eat Chinese sh!! for the rest of my life." Ho Chi Minh
I'm Cambodian, but I have Chinease lineage. Or at least on my dad's side. We celebrate the Lunar New Year too. Our new Years is in April.
That is why I pointed out earlier that "lunar new year" doesn't fall on the same date depending on which calender you are using.
