Happy 50th @B-Bob! And am posting this from my cellular phone! https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/03/tech/cell-phone-turns-50/index.html 50 years ago, he made the first cell phone call By Jennifer Korn Updated 9:02 AM EDT, Mon April 03, 2023 New York(CNN)On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper stood on a sidewalk on sixth avenue in Manhattan with a device the size of a brick and made the first public call from a cell phone to one of the men he'd been competing with to develop the device. "I'm calling you on a cell phone, but a real cell phone, a personal, handheld, portable cell phone," Cooper, then an engineer at Motorola, said on the phone to Joel Engel, head of AT&T-owned Bell Labs. While cell phones would not be available to the average consumer for another decade, anyone walking by Cooper on the street that day could have seen history being made. More at link
Thank you, @rocketsjudoka. Let me just save y'all the trouble and acknowledge the extent to which smart phones are different from my original idea, which was very simply a mobile telephone, where you could do something insanely dumb like call your boss from a sidewalk. Sigh. Whoever invented a web enabled phone, well, maybe that person should be getting some news stories. Let me also admit what you're all thinking: how sad it is when some dude keeps publicly acknowledging their one solitary achievement, their one technological 'hit.' To my credit, I no longer really seek it out. I don't even mention it in any of the classes I teach. But certain media members can't get enough of me holding one of those ancient massive phones against my ancient wrinkled dome. Maybe I'll shave my beard and dye my hair bright red for next year, just to change things up. Ha!
It could be worse. You could keep publicly talking about how much of a stud you were back in the 80’s playing high school football
Well, I wasn't much for football back in the 1960's. No, I was more in the electronics club and debate club. But I do remember an especially good chili dog. I've heard it said that life goes on, long after the thrill, of living is gone. And 50 years after the thrill of my first massive cellular phone and calling my boss from a sidewalk... I guess I can say it's true.
I watched this during the lockdown, so it might dry topic for some... but how cell towers work is pretty damn remarkable.

Yep he’s the real deal. I can’t find it right now but there is a great meme showing Ed O’Neil with his black belt with Keanu Reeves and Matt Damon in white belts. The caption said “Al Bundy is more of a badass than John Wick and Jason Bourne”
