Damn, 50 years. Clyde is the reason I started watching basketball and also the reason why I became a Rockets fan. It seemed like my childhood was filled with defending the players I liked against the guys considered to be the best. I was the only one who had Drexler's back out of my friends growing up when the Drexler/Jordan talks would go on, and (being a Bills fan) I was the only one who would back Thurman Thomas against Emmit and Barry. Looking at the picture also brings back memories of Penny. He was always my favorite player outside of the Rockets growing up and I still think how great he could have been if it weren't for the knee injuries.
Me too. Drexler was my idol growing up and I was a die-hard Blazer fan before he was traded to the Rockets. I guess I was really a die-hard Drexler fan instead. My favorite memory of him was when I was 12 and my sister was 7 we wondered off from our aunt and we were walking around at Meier & Frank (now Macy's) in Portland and I saw some super tall man walk in the door with a tiny elder white lady. I think she was his stylist or publicist or maybe his mother in Law who knows... anyways, As he approached closer I was like OMGEEEEEEEEEE that's Clyde Drexler.. my favorite player of all time! I was so surprised it was Clyde I walked up to him and I was like "Are you Clyde Drexler?!" of course it was but I was so shocked that's all I could say. He said " I sure am " and shook my hand and signed one of my shopping bags. My sister still gives me a hard time and says "are you Clyde Drexler?!?!" every once in a while. After that I got to meet him a few more times because he came into my friends parents dry cleaners and all the rest of the kids Trick or treated at his house every Halloween. My favorite memories growing up were practicing the Clyde Drexler shot. Over head, double leg back kick 2 handed shot. Also his FT form. Look down and dribble the ball fiercely before shooting. Easily one of the happiest days of my life ever was this. Drexler wanted that ring so bad and he finally got it. Such an awesome picture too. Happy 50th Glyde!
