    The Watergate Break-in

On June 17, 1972, police arrested burglars in the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. Evidence linked the break-in to President Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign. In February 1973 the Senate established a select committee chaired by Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina to investigate the 1972 presidential election. The Senate investigation revealed the existence of audiotapes, the content of which proved incriminating to President Nixon, and ultimately led to his resignation. Nationally televised, the Watergate Committee hearings boosted public confidence in Congress.

really interesting essay, worth a look

50 Years Later, the Motive Behind Watergate Remains Clouded
Despite the abundance of transcripts, FBI reports, and memoirs from those involved, we still know more about the cover-up than we do about the infamous political scandal.

IIRC the 1972 election was one of the biggest landslides in U.S. history right?

    It was.

People had different values then. Can you imagine any politician resigning over something like this now? SMH

I was speaking about his policies...recognizing China and allowing trade with the communist nation, removing us "temporarily" off the gold standard which caused massive inflation down the line, etc.

Well, I wasn't. I was speaking about the 1972 election and his popularity. Maybe you should clarify next time before assuming?

Either way his popularity went into the shitter after it was revealed the type of person he truly was. Folks back then had a better moral compass than we do now. It's every man for himself today with very little though for others. Can't wait to see what fossils and shitstains will be rolled out in 2024.

Gotta have the last word, eh? I probably shouldn't have wasted my time with a basic response to you given your post history. That's on me though...carry on.

I'm happy to engage in constructive discourse on here. Don't expect someone to treat you wonderfully if the first thing you have to say to them in the thread is "come on man quit trolling" and making assumptions about what their post was referring too.

Nixon crushed the 1972 election. He was massively popular. He didn't need Watergate. It was stupid.

That doesn't mean I think he was a good person, good President or anything else. That's your reading into it.

Reason, Powerline and The Federalist, so far.

Some interesting parts, but let's not pretend the bias doesn't exist.
