My wife and I purchased a new home a few months ago. We have a baby on the way, and ive been debating whether I should purchase a handgun or not for home protection. Some people thing its not a good idea, some people do. Whats everyones thoughts? Personally, I think its a little scary having a handgun in the home, especially once our child grows up. I cant decide whats best... Thanks

I was with you until the kid thing.

Get a really sophisticated home security system instead?

Yeah I do have a pretty good home alarm system. Any window opens or door the thing goes off, and its pretty loud. Still the thought of having nothing for self-defense is scary to me. My wife is all for it, but ide rather go off whats best and safer for my family.

Why would you even doubt whether or not you should get a gun for your house?
It is your constitutional right to have a gun, and you should take advantage of it.

What if an armed man breaks into your house? You'd want one on you then wouldn't you?

I am sure you're pretty smart and I am sure you have enough sense to keep a gun away from a child. I am also pretty sure you would be able to teach that child about guns and tell that child about what guns can do.

Why would you even hesitate at buying one?

a gun in the house with a kid is only dangerous if you are irresponible, e.g. by either leaving it in a vulnerable place, dont know how to handle it properly, etc

get a handgun or a shotgun. keep it locked up (multiple ways to make it safe) and you dont have to worry.

You should get a gun. Just make sure that you keep it hidden in a place that your child will never find (such as the top of a closet in a shoebox or something)

Personally, I feel much safer knowing that there is a .357 in my bedroom

    home security system.

my parents had one installed. someone broke in their back door. opened the door. the alarm went off. the guy didn't take one step in the house.

your gun is much more likely to cause an accident that you'll regret than it is to ever even be pulled by you in self-defense.

I know man, thats how I really see it. But i've got other people pulling out all these statistics on people owning guns, accidental deaths, deaths within the family, etc. Stupid ****, but it does make me think twice about it. Some people also assume that I would have the gun loaded at all times in the house. Which I wouldnt, if my alarm goes off, ive got plenty of time get it and load it up with a clip, even if I kept both in two different places..

I understand how you feel. Guns are scary. I don't like to hold them, fearing that it would just go off on me. However, there is crime EVERYWHERE and you don't know if your house is going to get broken in. there are some people that don't have regard for life. If it makes you feel better, get a gun but I am sure you will go crazy lengths to keep it from your baby. You're going to be a responsible parent, right? :)

This post makes me cringe.. kids aren't helpless.. they explore.. they find.. they tinker...

I know I did.. thankfully when I found my dad's guns I had no idea how to load a rifle.

My dad taught me about guns when I was like 5. Of course he was an alcoholic back then and I remember he was drunk when he was teaching me.

I actually remember him taking the clip out then saying, "Ok we are going to pretend I'm a bad guy breaking in, and when you see me, shoot me" So here I am, a 5 year old little skinny boy holding a handgun and my dad pretending to be a burglar. Then I remember pulling the trigger and him acting like he was shot. I can't believe I remember all that. Now that I think back, I feel it was very irresponsible of him to show me how to use a gun at that age. But he was drunk so, oh well. I knew where the guns were in the house but I knew never to use them.

If you are defending your house against raccoons, then yes.

Posters are advising you to get a gun and keep it hidden. If you want it for protection, how accessible is it going to be if an intruder suddenly shows up in your bedroom? How easy will it be to get to if you think you hear a noise in the kitchen at 3:00 AM?

I would recommend a shotgun, a simple pump of the gun would deter most robbers. However, be sure to keep it some place safe and accessible while hidden from your kid.
