It's been said that if you feel that you need a gun where you live, you move somewhere else. That does not work when you're in month 3 of a 12 month lease.

I am curious what the gun nuts of the BBS think would make a good hand gun for home defense. I moved into a shady part of Baltimore, and other classmates have had their home broken into. I have not fired a handgun in a few years, and it was only for sport, so I know I will have to go to the range first to practice again. Your suggestions are welcome!

Also, just for kicks what about semi-autos? (They're definitely out of my price range)

Most handguns that you will consider are going to be semi-automatic, unless you get a revolver.

A 12 guaqe pump shotgun is cheaper and would be more useful in the event.

If it's truly for home defense and not because you want a gun then don't bother with a handgun. Get a 12 gauge shotgun with a shorter barrel with some 00 buckshot. It will give a greater margin for error when it comes to your aim and the odds of the bullets going through the wall and killing your innocent neighbor (or your own wife or kids) goes down drastically.

    short barreled shotgun.

i'd go pump-action...the sound when loading tells them they're in the wrong home.

    short barreled

pump action shotty. wont have to worry as much about wall penetration.

just make sure it doesnt damage your laptop/computer. if you lose your notes, then it would be worse than get burgled.

CCW is next to impossible, but Castle doctrine has full effect.

I agree that a shotgun will be more effective for home defense.

If you are just set on a handgun instead, you can never go wrong with a Glock. I would recommend the 40 cal subcompact. Smooth shooter.

The Thunder 380 is a nice gun. I brought one from a friend of mine for $150 (plus transfer) but the .380 rounds are too expensive. I also had 1 Failure to Feed in about 200 rounds. I sold it for a $50 dollar profit :) . Still, it's a good gun until....

I bought a Ruger SR9. THIS IS A GREAT GUN! The price is reasonable at $430 plus tax and DROS. It's reliable and accurate as hell. The recoil is also manageable. 9mm rounds are also more powerful and cheaper. Get some hollow point rounds for home defense. The intruder is not getting up.

A shotgun WILL take care of business... No need for handguns if you only want home protection. You can get a decent shotgun for less than $300.

You're first round you can have blanks for scaring the intruder and if that don't work, the 2nd round you can have a bean bag shell. The 3rd round and so on will be live rounds if all else fails...

    I use a Mossberg 590, Beretta 92-FS (M9's civi version), a Smith & Wesson 686, and an FN-FAL.

Dude, if the bad guys don't hightail it out of there after they hear the very distinct sound of a 12 gauge being cocked, do you really think you want to give them two chances before you fill them full of holes??? Forget that!
