I'm guessing there will be a Halo 4.

Halo 3 Preorders Reach Over Four-Million in North America

While Spider-Man 3 is breaking records at the box office, Halo 3 is apparently breaking records of its own—before it is even out.

According to Gamestop officials, over four million preorders have been made for Halo 3 on Xbox 360. Xbox Evolved has verified this information at five different Greater Cincinnati Gamestop locations, including Gamestop stores, EB Games stores, and Funcoland stores, all under the same umbrella. This information was verified at all locations, however company a document showing this information was not revealed.

In the coming months, if this information is verified this would be the most preordered videogame of all time. Many of Gamestop’s employees believe that a large portion of the preorders are being made by consumers that don’t even own a Xbox 360, that are just waiting for the price of the system to go down.

In comparison, Grand Theft Auto IV’s combined PS3 and 360 preorders at the chain of stores comes in a very distant second. Microsoft reported three weeks before the release of Halo 2 in 2004 that the combined retail outlet preorders for the title was 1.5 million, which at the time was a record in itself. Gears of War, the best-selling title on Xbox 360 has worldwide barely cracked the four million mark. If this is all true, it is very likely that Halo 3 will outsell even Halo and Halo 2 combined. We will have more as it develops.

I just hope XBOX live does a good job with this many people. The COOP is my favorite part. I just hope the snipers are a little toned down. Legendary was a pain for the sniper areas in Halo 2.

Yeah, that number is probably not accurate (unless they're counting retail preorders and not customer preorders).

i agree, i don't see the big fuss....

anyways if those #'s are anywhere near accurate they are still impressive. We're only talking about 1 retailer EB/Gamestop. Add all the other big-box retailers, online giants, ect taking pre-orders and you have a huge hit on your hands that will draw many into "next-gen" for the first time as they buy the 360.

I'd say this game could easily sell 6 million copies by the end of this year...

Holy sh-t, I didn' know they were taking pre-orders. Make it 4,000,001.

    FWIW I prefer single player.

I always had a great time playing Halo 2 with my college roommates even though we were in different cities. Gears of War was fun, but I still prefered Halo 2.

6 million wouldn't be a problem. EB/GS only account for ~20% of the market, and not many people preorder games (maybe 20%-30% of total sales). Factor in some more preorders for when the marketing starts picking up, and then do some math and you'll see what I'm talking about. And doing this all with just ~5M 360s sold in the US too.

Again, I really doubt these numbers are accurate.

Count me in as one of the sheeple that has put down my preorder. I even preordered the Legendary Edition since I'm a sucker for special editions and whatnot.

I guess around 2.5M-3.5M for PS3 (roughly a million in each region), and maybe 7M-8M for the 360 (~5M in NA, ~300K in Japan IIRC, maybe 2M-3M in Europe). It is hard to say for sure since it is really difficult to get any numbers from Europe, outside of launch figures (and some of those are from Sony/MS/Nintendo, which may not be the most accurate as far as consumer sales go).

Yes...that's exactly why I don't believe these numbers. It has nothing to do with the fact that sales for Halo 3 would probably exceed 50M copies in just NA alone if these were accurate and past sales trends were any indication. That's totally plausible, but I refuse to believe it because I prefer PS3.
