This is not a new vs old but rather how did Hakeem come to be Akeem for so many years? Is the H silent? Rocket River ------------------
I was young when it happened, but I think it had something to do with his religion. he accepted a new religion and changed his name. I don't know the specifics, but it wasn't just a gradual thing. ------------------ Kenny Thomas had a foul called on him in the Western Conference Finals.
He didn't mind the misspelling. when he got to America he was more worried about fitting in. finally, after years, he finally told a reporter that there is a H in his name. ------------------
So it was more like the Biggio situation? ------------------ Kenny Thomas had a foul called on him in the Western Conference Finals.
In his autobio, Hakeem says that he changed his name because Hakeem with an "H" is the proper traditional Islamic spelling. ------------------ consultant, n.: Someone who knowns 101 ways to make love, but can't get a date.
It's simple...it has nothing to do with the reporter...His name WAS Akeem....Then he changed his name....But didn't tell anyone, until he told THAT reporter...Hakeem is a muslim name, Akeem is not... ------------------
Hakeem never changed his name. Hakeem is an Arabic name, so of course the English transliteration of the name was never all that important compared to how it is written in Arabic. (The name is also sometimes written as "Hakim", and means "One Who is Wise" - or "doctor" in some Muslim cultures.) Anyway, when Hakeem came to the U.S., like someone mentioned above, he allowed people to write it as Akeem, probably thinking "close enough". But later, when he realized that the much more common spelling among English-writing Muslims is Hakeem (and probably after he had taken a bit of flak for it from his fellow Muslims), he stressed to the media that his name is properly transliterated as Hakeem. Probably also as he grew more accustomed to our horrible English here in Texas, he realized that no one was saying the "h" sound even lightly (and it should be spoken lightly - most people still screw that one up). He definitely did not actually change his name, as he has been Muslim all his life and did not change his name as a matter of conversion. ------------------
That's not true. Hakeem wasn't muslim all his life. And THAT means that his name couldn't have been Hakeem before cause Hakeem is a purely Arabic (in turn muslim) name. ------------------

1. An LHutz sighting! Hooray! 2. 'Transliterated' is a perfectly chromulent word. We're not talking about translating from one language to another but from one alphabet to another. 3. Hakeem was born a Muslim and was born again (or at least the Muslim version of it) as an adult. 4.
