No, no, that's not it. He's that dead drunk broadcaster that Will Ferrell can do an amazing impression of.

Sorry, that was week. Unfortunately, my delete key is broken.

It's called "seppuku" (though I may have misspelled it). Basically the samarai takes his short sword (usually a "wakasashi") and guts himself (i.e. impale, move blade around several times, die).

Actually, the samauri that commits seppuca normally has a second, or assistant, to behead him after he makes the slashes to his abdomen. So he doesnt suffer too much.

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

The purpose of the second is to make sure the person comitting sepeku doesn't show any pain. Sepeku is only done when one has dishonered himself greatly. Some honor can be redeemed by not showing any pain or discomfort as you gut yourself. The second (a position of great honor, as it shows absolute and complete trust) beheads the person comitting sepeku before they can grimace.

I don't WANT Dream to do these things, I just wondered if he was thinkin' about "takin' a hit for the team" so to speak, but I didn't realize samurai's only do this if they have dishonored their clan or whatever. I don't think Dream's dishonored anybody....just wonderin'.

I think the difference between hari-kari and seppuku is that when you commit hari-kari you are choosing death over dishonor rather than choosing death because you have been dishonorable. Japanese soldiers would commit hari kari in WWII rather than be killed by the enemy.

Okay, I just flipped through a couple of my books on feudal Japan and it looks like both "hara-kiri" (correct spelling) and "seppuku" are the correct answers to cson's question. Apparently, the only difference between the two is that "seppuku" is the formal term and "hara-kiri" is the common term.

They were both considered an honorable way to die ("death before dishonor" is the best way to describe it).

hara-kiri... if the person was unable to do it, an assitant did it for him.

    man, that would suck.
