I don't know about anyone else, but wouldn't be awesome after drafting Yao Ming, then try to sign Hakeem back or trade for him and use him as a backup. Then Hakeem can train Ming to be like him. Now wouldn't that be awesome? It would also be great to see him retire as a Rocket. I feel he doesn't fit at all in Toronto and he is wasting his time there.
No. Hakeem has never mentored anyone. His remaining contract is for 2 years @ ~$12m...NO THANKS. His time has come and gone... it is time to move on.
Hakeem is not worth the money you'd have to pay him...we all had that argument here last year when he left....let's PLEASE don't rehash it!
Changed...thanks for finding that out... I know he hasn't mentored anyone and it looks like his time is gone, but it would be nice that he can pass along his skills and finish off w/ us.
Who would be a better backup to Ming than Hakeem? I would accept him back even though he traitored us...
If the Rockets needed 4 centers on their roster, Kevin Willis is far superior as a teacher and mentor. He has short arms like Ming, a nice jump hook and he is alot cheaper. Olajuwon is a poor teacher, but he did manage to teach us one thing - it's about the money.
Originally posted by GATER If he is so superior and a mentor, then why the hell was he not teaching Cato? CATO SUCKS!!! He must of taught him the wrong way to play basketball! I think Hakeem has the knowledge and wisdom of basketball to teach Ming the fundamentals to kick some ass!
Cato showed some gradual improvement this year. Wheter the reason for it was the trade talks or Kevin Willis' mentoring, we will never know...
Hakeem mentored Shaq, and we all heard Shaq say that, So I guess he did help someone wouldnt you say so.
Are you sure about that? He was never a presence at all when we needed him to clog that middle. Everyone just kept running over us! He schooled Robinson, Shaq, Ewing....and the list goes on! I know surely those guys have learned a thing or two in playing from Hakeem! That is why it is a good idea to bring Hakeem back to teach Ming, who is young and needs to be molded into a NBA superstar.
oh please. Using your logic: If Hakeem is so superior a mentor, then how come Cato sucked even worse when Dream was here? But I'm sure Dream was real busy this year teaching Montross the dreamshake.
Provide a link and name one person who brags or even mentions that he was mentored or taught basketball by Hakeem Olajuwon. What part of having athleticism and not being a good teacher is so hard for you to comprehend? How good of a basketball player was Pat Riley? Chuck Daley? Phil Jackson? Did you watch any Raptors games last year? Did you read any of the reports? Olajuwon at Toronto was a monumental failure. He didn't show Antonio Davis, Keon Clark or even Eric Montross s***. Case closed.
No. Sweeping a team and having their team bus stuck in the Richmond Ave. celebration taught Shaq more than Olajuwon ever did. Want to explain how many of Dreams old moves Shaq uses? ZIP.
I disagree Gator, I heard Shaq say in several interviews that Dream had helped him, and taught him MANY summers, I think I have even heard "Jeff" bring that fact up... Jeff, If you have one of those articles, please bring it up.
Well you know it really doesnt matter, and there is no use argueing about it, cause I truly dont think Hakeem will be coming back to play or teach.....So the argument is really vain IMO
My recollection is that all of the "heavies" around here - Clutch, Jeff, Will, heypartner, NIKE, aelliott, and others - to the person are on record as stating that Olajuwon for all of his skills is NOT a good teacher. If you think that is not the case, start a thread and see for yourself.
