Does it get exhausting after a while to always have the in your face audio? Do you turn it off every now and again to just "watch tv"? I am setting mine up now and while I am excited about the gear and toys it seems to me watching sports and TV might not be so fun.
TV is great, if there is surround sound, it will kick in, else its defaults to stereo. I haven't used my tv speakers in years.
No, there is not ever a time where you will prefer to have lower quality sound, no matter what you are watching. Just because you have a Home Theater setup does not mean it has to constantly be pounding your ears. Too many people confuse volume with quality.
this is a great thread. i will have the following equipment picked up, delivered and installed in my new home next weekend: 52" Samsung 120hz LCD HGTV, Klipsch 5:1 Surround, Yamaha Receiver, and a Playstation 3. i will be getting 2 speakers mounted in the walls next to the TV and the 2 other speaers flush mounted into the cieling above the couch. i heard the surround sound at Best Buy and i know it's going to sound incredible. is there such a thing as "getting fed up with too much surround sound" !?!?!
i'm gonna have my set-up just in time to watch the Rockets. the whole neighborhood is gonna know that the Rockets are on, HAHA !!! oh, and the UFC fights are gonna be INSANE !!!! joe rogan is litterally gonna be in my living room.
doug-ku, buddy of mine had a big party , his living room had 2 B&W speakers (the mid-end) with a Onkyo receiver. the sound was awesome (music). I still have 'cheap' speakers
I'm sure there is a Volume knob on each home theater receiver. Plus there should be sound level/decibel settings for each speaker on your receiver and some settings for type of music/entertainment you are listening/watching, like Arena, Rock, Pop etc. The only thing that is a drag is the turning on of 10 different devices ritual to watch or hear the simplest things like watching the news, like what the OP said. For that I just turn on the TV and use it's speakers.
You never know. My stupid old hag of a neighbor got mad one night when I was watching The Adventures of Robin Hood on HD-DVD. That's a 70 year-old movie with a mono track.
Logitech Harmony remotes are your friend. I have a 1000 and an 890. Pick them up on eBay or Amazon to save some $$. You can thank me later. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/remotes/universal_remotes/&cl=us,en
Great thread, just in time for me to upgrade my TV/Surround sound for Football season. Any comments on this 52 Samsung LCD? http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=SAMLN52A550 I'm still waiting on Logitech to incorporate bluetooth into their harmony line.
What you are speaking of is known as "listener fatigue" - usually boomy bass or harsh treble. It can happen if you do not have your system setup correctly and/or use poor equipment that overly colors the sound.
that's ALMOST the same exact TV i'm getting. if you go with the 52" Samsung be sure to go wioth the 120HZ VERSION !!!! it's a few hundred dollars more expensive but the clarity and the smoothness is well worth it. i didn't locate it on buydig but they have it at Best Buy. i talked them down to $2580 for this TV: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8749287&type=product&id=1202649424157
Me too. That's the only thing I don't like about my PS3. It super pisses me off that I have to use a separate remote.
Honestly, I think it's the BEST thing about the ps3. It's not line of sight and works so much faster than RF. I wish all of the big box AV manufacturers took a queue from Sony on this.
I've looked into a learning universal remote, but the tedious task of setting them up dissuades me from getting one. Plus there is usually that one function that the original remote has that the universal can't learn, and it's the one you can't do without. It's been awhile that I've looked at them though, maybe it's changed. And again, for just watching the news or some talk TV, I'd rather just have TV on then turning on the whole home theater rig. Good reminder though, I'll read up on them some more.
Harmony is not the normal 'learning' universal remote. it knows all. basically you get the remote plug into your computer usb and enter the info on logitech's website and it programs everything for you, you don't miss anything. it even ask which inputs you use for what and what sound settings on your receiver are. hell you can program the delay on when your tv boots up. great product.
Like Carlos said, get the 120hz tv. You're looking at the LN52A550. Get the LN52A650 or 750. The 650 is $2,279 on Amazon with free shipping and free white glove service. It'll be a lot cheaper than Best Buy. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN52A650-52-Inch-1080p-120Hz/dp/B001413DF8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219180149&sr=8-1
