Although this is a rather stupid topic, even in my opinion, I wanted to throw it out there. Is there anyone else out there that likes songs that you probaly shouldnt like? For example, after hearing it at a party for the first time in a couple of year, I downloaded Fiona Apples' "Criminal" and I cant help but sing along. I know its a chick song but I cant stop singing! Do I need help? Do you have a song that makes you sing along when you feel you shouldnt? Do you need help?

So is ANY song sung by a woman a chick song and vice versa? What's the criteria here?

yeah i have to repeat mrs jb.

i have (& sing along to) alanis morissette, tracy chapman, natalie merchant, sarah mclachlan.
i actually prefer women singers.

jack black: "i want to date a musician"
john cusack: "i want to live with one"
-high fidelity

i like mariah too, but only bought her #1's dvd. her 'always be my baby' always make me sad. i've actually stopped the song halfway cos its so depressing. yeah i suck.

jello
i only recently watched vanessa carlton's video. they even actually look alike.

does anyone here likes the chieftains? they play this celtic folk. i've never heard of them, but they're coming to my country for a concert and i've got nothing to do.
is this something i should check out or not bother?

Ok the criteria is when the song has lyrics like this:
I've been a bad bad girl
I've been careless with a delicate man
And its a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and I want to
Suffer for my sins
I've come to you 'cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don't know where I can begin
What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence
At hand
But I keep livin' this day like
The next will never come

Oh help me but don't tell me
To deny it
I've got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies till I'm good
Enough for him
I've got a lot to lose and I'm
Bettin' high
So I'm beggin' you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Let me know the way
Before there's hell to pay
Give me room to lay the law and let me go
I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against

Because he's all I ever knew of love

It makes me shudder when I start singing things like this..... I dont know, do you understand the guidelines now?

First off, Indigo Girls, kd lang, Suzanne Vega, Rosanne Cash, Joni Mitchell - all some of my all-time favorites. I'm not sure I get the issue. But, just looking at DrewP's posting of a Fiona Apple song makes me want to post this:

Everything’s so blurry
and everyone's so fake
and everybody’s empty
and everything is so messed up
pre-occupied without you
I cannot live at all
my whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

you could be my someone
you could be my savior
you know that I'll protect you
from all of the obscene
I wonder what your doing
imagine where you are
there's oceans in between us
but that's not very far

can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me
can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face

everyone is changing
there’s no one left that’s real
to make up your own ending
and let me know just how you feel
cause I am lost without you
I cannot live at all
my whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

you could be my someone
you could be my savior
you know that I'll protect you
from all of the obscene
I wonder what your doing
imagine where you are
there's oceans in between us
but that's not very far

can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me
can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me

Oh, Nobody told me what you thought
nobody told me what to say
everyone showed you where to turn
told you where to run away
nobody told you where to hide
nobody told you what to say
everyone showed you where to turn
showed you where to run away

can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me
can you take it all away
can you take it all away
when ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me

this pain you gave to me

you take it all
you take it all away...
this pain you gave to me
you take it all away
this pain you gave to me
take it all away
this pain

Now, how exactly is this different from Fiona's introspective ramblings? This sounds quite a bit more whiny than Fiona ever managed.

By the way, this is Puddle of Mudd.

I can pull out lyrics by Limp Bizkit, NIN, Staind, Creed, etc, etc. They all sound introspective and more than a little b****y, yet they are all guys.

On the other hand...

Now the time has come to speak
I was not able
And water through a rusted pipe
Could make the sense that I do

Gurgle, mutter
Hiss, stutter
Moan the words like water
Rush and foam and choke

Having waited
This long of a winter
I fear I only
Croak and sigh

Somewhere deep within
Hear the creak
That lets the tale begin

Now the time has come to move
I was not able
Water through a rusted pipe
Could make the moves that I do

Stagger, stumble
Trip, fumble
I fear I only
Slip and slide

Somewhere deep within
Hear the creak
That lets the tale begin

Somewhere deep within
Hear the creak
That lets the tale begin

Now, these lyrics brilliantly use the sounds and images of water trying to wind its way through a rusty pipe as a metaphor for an awkward situation.

These are Suzanne Vega.

It isn't a "chick" thing. It's a "talent" thing.

Well Fiona is talking about a guy that she broke. When a song begins with "Ive been a bad bad girl" and I am singing along, it makes me think. Do you get it .......?

No, I don't. Are you afraid you are going to turn into a girl because you sung "I've been a bad bad girl?"

If you worried about what singing a song lyric like that might say about you as a man, I think you probably need to re-evaluate your masculinity. I just don't see the big deal.

Its not that big of a deal, it's just funny to me to be singing "Ive been a bad bad girl...." I was wondering if any other guys are big fans of songs that you would think the majority of fans would be women.

Hell, I admit, when I started listening to music, it was mostly "chick" music. I was into the first Alanis CD, Natalie Merchant's "Tigerlily" CD, and I even bought Donna Lewis' CD, remember she is the chick that had that song "I Love You Always Forever" stuck in your head.

Even now I am still into chick music. I cant get the Vanessa Carlton CD out of my car, Michelle Branch is cool, and I am into that new Avril song "Complicated".

There is nothing wrong with liking female singers. I like Celine Dion - beautiful voice. Also Whitney Houston sings like an angel. There is no substitute for talent.

The best singer in the world is Cece Wynans-like they must sing in heaven. I'll be driving her around in a red convertible in heaven if I make it there.

Hmmm...I like a bunch of women artists. Madonna for starters. And I have a minor crush on Michelle Branch. Something about chicks and guitars...don't ask. But women have no place in rap music. There's nothing I can't stand more than a female hip-hop artist yapping away (Lauryn Hill excluded because she has the coolest voice).

I once dated a girl who liked Insane Clown Posse. I should've ended it right then and there. :(
