Just got back from the Guy V. Lewis dinner. Overall it was a very impressive tribute to a true coaching legend and race-relations hero to basketball in the Southwest. Calvin Murphy, Clyde Drexler, Otis Birdsong, Reid Gettys and Elvin Hayes all gave player testimonials that were great. Elvin Hayes credits Guy V Lewis with 100% of his success. A whole crew of coaches also spoke, including Billy Tubbs, Rick Barnes, Willis Wilson, Carroll Dawson, UH's coach (forgot name), Rick Majerus, Don Haskins and a couple others. Jim Nantz had a taped speech that he gave while on the NFL Today Set. Deion Sanders, Dan Marino, and Boomer Esiason all chimed in with humorous remarks.

What really struck me was Bill Worrell's humor. Worrell was the emcee and had some outrageously funny lines. He really broke loose from his stiff on air personality. His funniest line of the evening was, "Looking out across this room, I see more talent than Charles Barkley's table at the Men's Club." Clyde Drexler had perhaps the biggest gaffe of the night when he said that Lewis displayed strong moral 'turpitude'.....uhh Clyde, I think you meant 'fortitude'.

What are your opinions on Guy V Lewis being in the Hall of Fame? He has over 590 NCAA wins, 5 Final Four appearances, 11 NBA first round draft picks under him, and coached 3 of the 50 Greatest NBA Players (Dream, Drexler, Hayes). He never won a championship, however.
