I want to buy a cheap .22LR rifle.
Nothing special. Just something to play with at the gun range and maybe hunt a few rabbits in the backyard. I want a rifle with a scope under $200

Here are the 2 I am looking at:

    1. Remington 597
    http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/rimfire_rifles/model_597/model_597_specs.asp

    2. Savage 64FXP
    http://www.savagearms.com/64fxp.htm

Both should be available @ Academy under $200
    http://www.academy.com/index.php?pa...cts/outdoors/hunting/rim_fire_rifles&start=10

So to those who know something about these things, which one of those 2 would be a better choice?

I hope you don't have a beard or Homeland Security will be tapping on you.

22 cal are some of the most deadly guns... once the bullet is inside of you it doesnt have enough velocity to exit you so it just rattles around inside and destroys organs

That maybe true but first the bullet must get inside you.
Anyways...so is it better to carry a 22 as a concealed weapon for personal protection rather than a 40 cal or 9 mm ?

naw those have much better stopping power just a 9 bullet enters and exits as opposed to bouncing around

10/22 is definitely tried and true. I would probably buy the gun without a scope at first. 1) open sights will force you work on your form more, but more importantly, 2) nothing sucks worse than really cheap glass.

I'm not saying that you need to go and spend $1,500 on really great German optics................but a really cheap scope is downright horrible.

My brother has a Bushmaster M4 rifle so I shot that alot.
I also have 4 hand guns. I am tired of shooting using sights :D :p
I dont need anything expensive since I am not a hunter and will most likely just be shooting paper targets for fun. I think I am gonna get the Remington rifle.

I saw the 10/20 Ruger at Bass Pro Shop. It was the "wooden" style one. It was all they had. The price was $289 I believe and no scope. It looked kind of ugly...of course looks aren't everything :p
