    Van Gundy to visit Houston
Rockets invite coach to city for tour

CHICAGO -- For the first time since Rudy Tomjanovich stepped down, the Rockets' coaching search has a frontrunner.

Former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy emerged as the favorite to become the Rockets' next head coach when he agreed late Tuesday to accept general manager Carroll Dawson's invitation to visit Houston.

Dawson, who is in Chicago for the NBA pre-draft camp, would not characterize Van Gundy's trip to Houston as a second interview or the start of negotiations but said Thursday's meeting with Van Gundy could escalate into more serious talks.

"He wanted to see the city and the new arena," Dawson said after Van Gundy agreed to visit Houston. "I don't think that's unusual when someone is thinking about a new job. I invited him to Houston, so obviously I'm glad he's coming, but he really did just want to see everything -- the homes, the buildings, the schools. That's what it is."

Asked if he anticipated closing a deal with Van Gundy while he was in Houston, Dawson said, "I'd like to get a new coach. Let's see how everything goes."

Dawson said there have been no negotiations between the Rockets and Van Gundy. Van Gundy said Tuesday he would not comment on the position, referring questions to Dawson.

Van Gundy already has one high-profile endorsement and a possible assistant coach in former Knicks player Patrick Ewing.

"I enjoyed playing for Jeff," Ewing said. "It was great. Jeff is an outstanding coach. He'll do very well in Houston. They have an outstanding young big guy with Yao Ming, and Jeff is used to coaching big guys. He's a great person. He'll do a great job."

Ewing, who was an assistant with the Washington Wizards last season, said that if Van Gundy is named the Rockets' coach, he might be interested in joining him.

"We'll see," Ewing said. "Jeff is a great guy. I'm still under contract with the Wizards, but it is only a one-year deal. I probably would like to work with their big men. They really have an outstanding young big man and some great perimeter players."

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander is not in Houston, and Dawson said Alexander has not scheduled a trip to meet with Van Gundy.

Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy met with Dawson and Alexander on May 26 in Dallas, becoming finalists for the position when Paul Silas and Larry Brown were hired by Cleveland and Detroit, respectively.

The Rockets have been searching for a coach since Tomjanovich stepped down May 23.

Van Gundy, 42, led the K nicks to a 248-172 record in seven seasons before resigning 19 games into the 2000-01 season. He led the Knicks to a 37-32 postseason record, including a trip to the 1999 NBA Finals.

Van Gundy was a Knicks assistant for 6 1/2 seasons, earning a reputation for helping build the Knicks into a strong defensive team, before he replaced Don Nelson as coach late in the 1995-96 season.

We have the greatest big man legacy in NBA history (OK, maybe tied with the Lake Show) and we mighthave to watch that loser Ewing on our bench to help Yao? Is something wrong with this picture. Keep Pat and of Clutch City!

I'll be pissed if Ewing works with Yao instead of Mo Malone or Dream. Malone would beat Ewing's ass every day of the week and twice on sundays. We don't need a stinking primadonna like Patrick polluting Yao's mind and heart.

I find that interesting, the idea that Ewing would come on as a big man's coach. It's Eddie that he might do some good for, actually. Maybe Mo Taylor too.

I hope this happens. Yao needs a good teacher. I wonder what happened to all those rumors of Bill Russell and Moses wanting to teach Yao.

BTW...Steve Francis is on the cover of NBA BALLERS game...

Who doesn't want to work with Yao? Heck, even Lisa Ling wanted to get busy with Yao in the "backseat of his SUV."

    As for Ewing???

I like the guy et al. but, is he really the big man coach we want for Yao??? I mean, how far did he get with Kwame Brown?

    :p

Heck, why not just get John Starks and Charles Oakley as assistants to join Patrick Ewing?

    The Houston Knicks ;)

Isn't it kind of tacky for Ewing to say he would like to work for one team when he's signed to a different one?

DoD- Ewing needs a 2nd job.

He makes a lot of money, but he spends a lot of money, too.

    Good Doctor,

You'll have to excuse Patrick, as he's done a number of pretty tacky things throughout his career. Ugly salary negotiations, his "guaranteeing" the Knicks getting the NBA ring, getting caught for pleasuring himself at the "Gold Club" in Atlanta... ugh.. the list goes on and on. And don't even get me started on his suits!

    :D

    NIKEstrad,
    THAT was freakin' funny.

BTW, concerning Nash, is it just me or does he look like a missing Gallagher brother from Oasis?
