Just saw on the news that the Cleveland Cavs are about to be sold to a man named Dan Gilbert for $375,000,000. This would be the second biggest price tag ever on an NBA franchise if/when it goes down.

I'm just curious why Gund would sell them NOW!? The team is finally winning for the first time in almost a decade. I mean I know that means thier value is at an all-time high, but he could make a lot more money if he'd just wait and let LeBron make him a little more cash.

    Thoughts?

There's a lot more to these decision than just making money... frankly, these owners don't often make/lose enough money during the season to really make a difference to their bank account.

He was going to make a huge profit on his team no matter if Lebron was there or not (although Lebron's presence probably added 50 million alone).

Maybe, the whole Boozer fiasco made him sick of these guys for good... who knows.

Health always a Gund issue. That $$$ could make the timing right, anytime.

It will be interesting to see if the new owners are big spenders. The Cavs have some serious cap money this upcoming off season with Z coming off the books among others. Word is the Cavs want to make a run at Michael Redd to shore up their outside shooting AND use Z's bird rights to resign him. I think the addition of Redd to the Cavs would be huge with LeBron.

Yep. Considering the harsh winter Gund as watched over since the days of Mark Price, he's making an outstanding business decision.

Good point..but I still think he should wait at least a couple more years. Once LeBron hits his peak I think this team would be title contenders (or at least Eastern champs) and he could get even more for them.

The other thing I wondered: will the name of our precious Gund Arena be changed?

Buy Low Sell High theory...Lebron is the key to this as his ability to bring fans to the games, market Cavs jersey's, etc is undeniable...

    Good Business Move...

    I agree.

An unfashionable thats having a short rise due to a star player. Lets face it....few players in the game could make the Cav the type of club anyone would be interested in.

When LeBron is gone....this team wont be worth nearly as much.

Dan is just the front man. I really wanted to buy the Rockets and donate the team to Clutchfans, but Les just won't sell.:)

    How about this:

you buy the Cavs just to give the Rockets LeBron, Gooden, McInnis:p

    LeBron
    McGrady
    Jackson
    Gooden
    Yao

Hell just give us Lebron. As long as we get him, who gives a crap about those other guys.

Well, for sticking out your tongue, I'm not going to do it...and I would have added Ilgauskas, Varejao and Diop for Lue, Ward, Howard, Spoon, Gaines and Bowen. Then it would have been:

    McInnis, Barrett
    McGrady, Sura
    LaBron, Jackson
    Gooden, Taylor, Varejao
Yao, Ilguaskas, Mutombo -- Boki, Padgett and Diop on IR.

    Oh well, too bad.
