http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/12/africa/12iraq.php BAGHDAD: In an astonishing heist, guards at a bank here made off with more than a quarter-billion dollars on Wednesday, according to an official at the Interior Ministry. The robbery, of $282 million from the Dar Es Salaam bank, a private financial institution, raised more questions than it answered, and officials were tight-lipped about the crime. The local police said two guards engineered the robbery, but an official at the Interior Ministry said three guards were involved. Both confirmed that the stolen money was in American dollars, not Iraqi dinars. It was unclear why the bank had that much money on hand in dollars, or how the robbers managed to move such a large amount without being detected. Several officials speculated that the robbers had connections to the militias, because it would be difficult for them to move without being searched through many checkpoints in Baghdad. _________________________________________________ The article goes on to describe various horrible things that also happened today.
Imagine all the ham sandwiches the Mehdi militia/"Al-Qaida in Iraq" can buy with that...and may be a few RPGs and IEDs from Iran with whatever is left. What could possibly go wrong? Anyways, I am sure bank customers will get their money back. Thank God for FDIC...
Not really to make light of it, but you've got to imagine Iraq is the best place to rob a bank. They've got much bigger things to worry about.
If that money gets into the wrong hands... one can only imagine the awful consequences. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bWCKaFNJIf8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bWCKaFNJIf8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
This is how the CIA funds the insurgency in Iraq to prolong the conflict. Iran would take the $282 million for itself in a heart beat.
I read earlier today that the source for the story (Iraqi Finance Minister?) got his math wrong and that the take was closer to half a mil.
that is just pocket change - remember that the pentagon 'lost' 8 billion at the start of the war and congress blocked any investigation into what happened.
and almost 500K american soldiers died in WW2...so by your comparisons, whats the big deal with 3500?
what are you talking about? im talking about 8 billion dollars that went missing at the start of the iraq war and a republican congress which blocked any attempts to figure out what happened to it. why are you bringing up casualty figures from WWII?
the history channel actually did a movie on the hiest alone, it was interesting because donald sutherland (sp) played jimmy and he had a full irish accent.
just messing with you. But you made one thing sound less important when compared to another...i did the same.
