Nets forward Griffin stays behind bars -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press HOUSTON -- New Jersey Nets forward Eddie Griffin must remain in a Houston jail until at least until his Feb. 13 sentencing date on a mar1juana possession conviction, a judge said Tuesday. Griffin was arrested Monday for violating a curfew set as a condition of his release on bond in an unrelated aggravated assault charge. Griffin, 21, was released by the Houston Rockets in December and signed with the Nets. He went on leave from the team last week so he could check into the Betty Ford Center to get six weeks of treatment for alcohol abuse, according to attorney Rusty Hardin. In November, Griffin was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a woman accused him of hitting her three times in the face and shooting at her as she drove away from his home Oct. 25. He was free on bond for that charge until Monday. Griffin was convicted of mar1juana possession Jan. 20. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nba&id=1726441
It's a good thing he's 21 or the gladiators would have ate his peanut butter lunch. This will probably this first time in a a long time that Mr. Griffin will enjoy three hots and a cot for an extented amount of time. Seriously, I think this will be rock bottom for Eddie, so the only way to go is up for him.
You know what's terrible? And before throwing stones, you should know that I myself realize this is wrong and am simply offering a confession. There's this cold chamber in my heart, this small, evil little part of me, that's rooting for Griffin to stay in jail and not come back to the NBA. Almost as if Griffin's personal tragedy justifies the Rockets' decision to cut him. If Griffin played for the Nets and rehibilated his career and next year exploded into an All-Star caliber forward, well, you know how sick we'd all feel. So the evil part of me is reassured, in a way, that the All-Star scenario looks less and less likely. I'm a bad person. The NBA is a game, and it's absurd that I'm placing my petty spite over the real-life health of this troubled young man. Yet every time I try and feel sorry for Eddie, every time I try and summon the empathy, instead I'm just glad that Griffin is closer to dropping dead than he is to squaring off against the Rox and dropping 30. (Well, that's over-stating it, even for me. I don't want Griffin to die. But I think it sums up my ugly but honest position). And I doubt if I'm alone.
I should also add: I feel absolutely no malice toward Griffin himself. He likely has a medical condition that is truly deserving of our sympathy. And even if he doesn't have a medical condition, he still suffers from something and that also deserves our sympathy. I don't hate Griffin. (And even if I did, of course I wouldn't really want anything bad to happen to him. That depth of spite is reserved for one player and one player only: Scottie Pippen). My point was this: it's funny how our love for our team can sometimes skew our values. It's not about Griffin, it's about the Rockets. If they lose some player, any player, and that player goes on to blossom into an All-Star . . . well, that's tough. And it's doubly tough given the rich pricetag of Griffin in the first place.

I'd sure like to live in Eddie Griffin's world. It's a place so wonderful that a future making millions of dollars every year to play a game (and who cares if he even likes basketball? i'd clean toilets with my tongue for the money he gets paid) is something that can be thrown away.
Don't feel too guilty. Like Gordon Gekko taught us in Wallstreet, it's a zero sum game. Because Eddie fumbled away his chance, a hungry player that would otherwise be in the CBA now has an NBA job. As for jail, its probably a zero sum game as well, because I doubt if there are any empty cots in an overcrowded prison system taken as a whole. So Eddie's [deserved] loss is someone else's gain.
The youngster tanks are up to and including 21. He's classified as an R1-L5 most likely, so he's in one of the rockin' tanks. I wonder what his SPN# is? If you've ever heard of a SPN number or 'R1-L5', I definitely pity you.
At least he can go cold turkey in jail. Rasselas, appreciate the admission. I'm on the opposite side of the fence on Eddie Griffin, but my motivations are likely equally petty.
You are not alone. There are a number of embittered posters and with good reason. While I am deeply disappointed in the sad outcome in the Eddie Griffin saga myself, I still hope he manages to straighten out his life and become an NBA star with a legacy of consistently awful games against the Rockets.
