Cornel West. I got to see him live at Rice a couple of year ago. If I ever see him leading a mob down the street, I'll join.

Timothy Leary, in my "History of Rock Music" class at the University of Texas in 1979.

He told a hilarious story about how John Lennon wrote "Come Together" originally for Leary's 1968 California governor campaign. Leary then got busted for pot and thrown in jail, and that was the end of the campaign. While in jail, he heard "Come Together" on the radio. After he got out, he met up with John Lennon and asked him why the Beatles released the song that was supposed to be for Leary's campaign.

According to Leary, Lennon said: "Think of me as a tailor. When a gentleman orders a custom fitted suit from a tailor, and then declines to pay for it or pick it up, what does the tailor do? He puts it on the rack in his store and sells it to someone else, that's what!"

"Adam Zirkin- Brandeis university(you will hear of him someday)" -The Voice of Reason

Hey Voice, is Adam this clean cut looking fella with short curly brown hair? and a democrat? Man, I haven't seen this guy in years. I knew him since HS and he was a damn good speaker then. Taught me much of what I know in speech. What a small world. I can't believe he's making such an impact already.

As for greatest speaker, I'll go with Dr. Peter Pober, Director of the Speech and Communications department @ TU. I know there are of lot of T-sips on this board (longhorns) and if any of you get a chance, take his class. The man is a great speaker, just amazing. I think he's 37 but he looks 50 something because the man never rests and just works and works.

Barbara Jordan - afflicted with disease but her words were spoken like no human I've ever heard. Her words hit like hammers. The enunciation, the delivery, the impact... simply mesmerizing.

I can think of several others that are great speakers, but I've never witnessed in person. Among them :

Martin Luther King - I still get emotional listening to some of his stuff. Simple man, merely words, but dynamite of a delivery.
Jew Don boney - I often despise him, but I'll give credit where credit is due. I can't find too many people on this planet as terse that is as eloquent.
Colin Powell - Don't know why, but I dig the guy. He may be boring, but I pay attention when he talks. Probably shouldn't be ranked as a great speaker as much as an imposing figure that happens to carry himself well.
Garrison Keillor - not sure if you'd classify him as a speaker, but he's an awesome story-teller. I used to love listening to him and his "Lake Wobegone" tales as a kid.
Charles Osgood - along the lines of Garrison Keillor, I loved listening to this guy on the news. Again, I'm not sure if he's a "speaker" per se.
