This is pretty interesting. http://www.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=617865&page=2&forum_id=7 I put it in this forum because Hakeem is one of the people being mentioned (obviously).
I'll save people the time... there's actually an argument about whether Hakeem was a better defensive player than Robinson. Also, it's accepted as fact over there that Dream was in his mid 20's at UH and mid 30's during championships.
When all is said and done, you could certainly argue Duncan's achievements against Hakeem's. Three-plus titles, a handful of Finals MVPs, and one of only 10 players to win multiple regular season MVPs. That said, Hakeem was by far the greater player. To be able to garner the same level of accolades and accomplishments as Duncan in the era that Hakeem did it - with significantly greater overall statistical success - is all the proof that is needed. P.S. - David Robinson need not apply* *See 1995 WCF for details.
play in TX or for TX or for the U.S or in the U.S or in the world.. the answer is always one...HAKEEM!!
i made the mistake of clicking that link...duncan is superior to robinson but it's arguable that robinson in his prime playing in the league now would have just as much success. i don't think duncan is a superior talent to robinson. duncan will finish his career with more accomplishments then dream but his supporting cast has been better for longer...props to their organization. however i think dream is a significantly better talent and i'd easily take him in his prime over duncan. robinson vs. dream is a joke. dream proved that in 95 when he ran right through him. sp*rs fans are hilarious.
i'm glad i clicked on the link and saw my two favorite groups of fans, aggies and spurs fans, debating about whether david robinson was actually better than hakeem olajuwon. i think i lost a couple of brain cells reading that crap.
Duncan is really, really good. Honestly, and frustratingly, I have a hard time choosing between him and Hakeem. David Robinson is just a notch below.
Duncan just has never had the spectacular season as Hakeem did in the title years. 2001 was TDs best statistical year, with 25 ppg in the regular season and 27+ in the playoffs. Very good stats, but Hakeem was 27ppg in the regular season and was over 30 in 1995. Also, Duncan has never had the 14+ rebound/game season or the 4+ blocks/game seasons that Hakeem had. That said, Duncan is a great player and is very consistent. I think he benefits from a lack a big men in the league. He would be a great player in any era, but the lack of low post big men makes him appear even better.
Somone argued that Drob didnt play basketball before his senior year in HS. I HIGHLY doubt that as being possible. he may not have played organized ball, but he was sure as hell to play some sort of Bball. With Hakeem, I doubt he even knew what basketball was until he got to that age.
man, I dont know how can u compare Duncan to Hakeem ... Hakeem is the greatest of all time.. Hakeem won championships with nobody... yeah, nobody (Kenny, Horry, Bullard, Max.. .were all good, but not superstars).. Duncan had Robinson in his first years, now he has Ginobili, Parker, and their team is so deep and good ... Hakeem won it.. Hakeem was great.. Hakeem IS THE BEST PLAYER TO EVER TOUCH A BASKETBALL.. I like Duncan too, the dude is a good and i like the way he plays, but he doesn't even have half of the qualities Hakeem had ... Tim is only a post-up player with crazy-fundamental footwork (I really admire his "fundamental stuff because I like old school).. but Hakeem was everything.. Hakeem was everything...he did everything a player can do in the great game of basketball.... one more thing everybody... look at my sig... it pretty much explains everything..
According to Charles Barkley, the self proclaimed greatest player ever not named Jordan, its Charles Barkley.
completely agree, and ur sig is even better than mine.. I might consider doing some copying from u...
OK, it's still an interesting question, and one that can be argued in many ways. For instance Duncan's numbers so far are damn impressive, maybe he'll eclipse olajawons numbers... but here's another simple criteria for best -- ask the opponents. What would dRob say? Shaq? How bout BigShot Bob? Elie? Dream? I'd guess all but Dream would would say dream... And I'm sure Dream would smile REAL big before answering it....
