2 places in Austin are famous for this:

    1. The Oasis - Nice multi-level patio for drinks and possibly appetizers ONLY. Incredible view of Lake Travis. The food completely and utterly sucks, and I have been there 3 times trying different things. The service is lame as well.

    2. Iguana Grill - Decent deck and good view (not as nice as Oasis). Happy Hour is from 3-6pm , Chips and salsa were store bought at best, tacos tasted sweet - disgusting. Server was a complete ho.

I guess these joints make the bling off the view because their food is TERRIBLE!!!

I miss the hell out of my Houston restaurants..... :(

LOL! Exactly, all I did was read the title, and knew immediately that the topic being discussed was the Oasis.

I've never been to Iguana Grill, but Carlos 'N Charlie's over by Mansfield Dam is usually the preferred chill spot after hanging out at the the lake. Drew, I don't understand why you miss the fine Houston restaurants, which are mostly chain joints off the freeway. Austin's got some of the best selection of restaurants in the country. Here's some of my favorites:

    Z Tejas
    Clay Pit
    Trudy's
    Thai Passion
    Romeo's
    Brick Oven
    Suzi's Chinese Grill

I knew this was an Oasis thread. Even their drinks are watered down from what I hear.

I hope thats some kind of a sick joke. Houston is easily amongst the leaders of fine dining restaurants (and basically everything else) in the whole freakin world.

    Fogo De Chao
    Tonys
    Anthonys
    Americas
    Damians
    Da Marcos
    Indika
    Brenners
    Brennans
    Marks

These are just a mere fraction of places that will blow your socks off.

I have lived and dined in both towns and whole heartedly agree.

Houston is top 5 in the nation for restaurants easy.

There are some good Austin restaurants that DaDa and Baqui99 listed, but thats about it, and most of the places cater to granolas and health nuts. I want fatty food and Houston delivers.

Cafe Red Onion was one of my favs in H-town.

you will have to excuse Baqui. He very rarely has anything nice to say about Houston from what I have seen.

Both cities have some nice places, and they both have some crappy ones..but seeing as you can include the nice places in the Clear Lake area(Kemah, etc..), and Galveston area in with Houston places to eat..Houston wins..

I have a degree in Restaurant management so I know just a tad bit about restaurants.

Houston has over 10,000 freakin restaurants! And is considered by many experts to be the best city in the world for restaurants.

Never been to NY, SF or NO. LA has its share. I would put Vegas in my top three.

    Red Square
    Prime
    Bertolinis
    Picasso

These restaurants in Vegas are absolutely awesome.

True. Living in the surburbia hell known as Sugar Land, I was relegated to dinners at fine establishments as Macaroni Grill, TGI Friday's, and The Olive Garden. :(

Problem is that Greater Houston is so large that getting to a nice restaurant on Westheimer, the Galleria area, or downtown can be a task for someone who lives in Katy, Sugar Land, Mo. City, etc.

I just got back from Vegas and ate at both Picasso and Prime.

Freaking amazing food. I actually enjoyed my steak at Prime over my Veal Chop at Picasso, yet both were totally Scottish.

I heard somewhere that Houston was the Restaurant Capital of the nation on top of being the strip club capital of the world. ;)

Yeah the Filet Mignon at Prime is simply one of the best money can buy.

Baqui, the prices at Prime are between $25-50 for entreess. Picasso is I think is like 35-75.

"I knew this thread was about Oasis when I opened it..." et al.
    Yep I agree.

Then again, from what I have personally seen, nothing beats the view from the back patio of the Princeville Hotel, Princeville Kauai. Food was awesome too. Best part was you didn't have to stay at the hotel to eat there, which is a good thing; minimum price for a room is $400 a night in the OFF season.
