The question is will Netflix go the way of blockbuster once movies become rent-able through download?
I think so. As broadband penetration increases, the likelihood of this happening goes up. Netflix's strength is their distribution model. Their community of reviewers is good too. With downloads they probably can't enhance distribution too much unless they come up with a kickass GUI. Itunes is already big competition in that respect. They'll have to rely on the community to make their online play more viable.
http://paulgraham.com/articles.html Internet startups are where's it's at. I read somewhere that reddit.com was started with 4 people and 20K in funding. What kind of skills/interests do you have?
Maybe... But I think they have a great chance when you consider HD movies are coming, and they won't be as easy to distribute online.
I hate the man who invented the scouring pad on a stick to clean the tub. I could have so created that crap. Man... missed opportunities.
That's so true. You just know that the movie studios and distributors like Apple will try their best to muck up the market with their DRM crap. In order to download a fully-enabled, HD-quality movie you'll probably have to promise them your first-born or something. And even then you'll only get to watch it for 24 hours.
More than that, HD movies are going to be HUGE. The average person won't have space on hard drive or the bandwidth to download them.
