    Hey Guys,

I have a new Dell Dimension, duo core, 2.6ghz, 2gb ram, it has the standard integrated on board graphics. Last night I installed Call of Duty 4 on it and I was expecting pretty decent visuals. They were terrible, lagging even around the 1000x700 range. So today I'm research graphics cards.

    8800GT, 8600GT have good reviews.

What do you guys use? Whats the latest and greatest?

Best card for around $100 is the ATI Radeon 4770

First how much are you willing to spend and does your motherboard support a pcie slot for another video card?

8800 are a good video card but you probably should go with the 9800. The latest and best would be the Nvidia GTX285 and the ATI HD 4870+.

Best bang for your buck you go with ATI 4890

    Link for all 4890

Whats your budget? 8800gt is an older chipset. If you want to go nVidia

    EVGA GTX 260 Video Cards

And I know you won't go over anything those pricewise you cheapass :D .

ATI 4870 is good if you're really on a budget.

Latest and greatest is nvida GTX 295, but I like my 4870x2.

Also what size monitor are you gaming at. That will make a huge difference in what video card you can buy. If its 20 inches are so, then a 4870 or 4850 is probabaly the way to go. If you wanna splurge a little, you cant go wrong with a GTX 260

the 9800 is in my price range-- 1GB is good.

the last two GTX285 and 4870+ are beasts. 2GB DDR would be insane.

At a $100 price point, you can't go wrong with the ATI 4770. It's not as beefed up as the 4870, but it offers much better performance than the NVDA counterpart.

Where can you procure one of these hundred dollar 4770's? They are gone!

The 9800GT is a 8800GT using 65nm process technology, has an HDMI connection, is easier to overclock, and is a bit quieter. I've got the 1GB 9800GT and am happy with it, but you should get the Radeon HD 4850, if it's similar or cheaper in price. I think it tested out to be around 60% faster.

Latest ATI are good cards. But I don't like them eating up a whole bunch of wattage and produce 10degrees in extra heat comparing to Nvidia.

I doubt your motherboard support PCI Express 2.0 but the latest video cards are backward compatible with PCI Express 1.1.

If ATI isn't getting great yields from the 40nm process it's possible the 4770 is being shelved. The 4850 is a faster card going for 10% less than this card's target price and it might not make sense to push a lower end part on expensive chips (because of yield per wafer)

I'll check when I get home (still at work). I wonder if I would have to get a new power supply as well. I hope not, that'd be a pain in the butt. The computer is only a few months old, dual 20 inch monitors, I'm running Vista Business.

If you're not paying extra tax on top of it, it's totally worth it.
