Can't say I agree with this. This was not a well thought out decision in my opinion. This decision is based on a surplus of retail and restaurant job openings. I understand trying to goad folks that previously worked these jobs to go back, but there are hundreds of thousands of middle class workers that still can't find jobs in their trade. Restaurant and retail jobs are not for them. They are going to get crushed by this.

Y'all can call me a lot of things on the D&D, but you can't say I'm not objective. Bad call on this one Abbott.

It seems that things should be set up so that if these folks are offered their job back or a new job at the same or higher pay and they reject it, then their benefits should be cut off.

I understand both sides. For Texas, it might be a good call although it should be tapered off or pressure put on market instead of a cold cut.

The Daily podcast touched on this today as part of their discussion on the broader economy. The move by GOP-controlled states to cut off the additional federal unemployment is contrasted by Democratic states continuing to participate. It'll provide for an interesting contrast in a few months to see who was right and who was wrong.

One interesting thought is that difficult childcare options are a major factor on people not returning to work yet. If daycares, camps, schools, etc. are all still operating at reduced capacity, if at all, then that prevents somebody from re-entering the workforce full time.

That would be a much better way to tackle it, in my opinion.

Had some friends text me that they have to go back to work sooner than expected. I had no idea they were just sitting on it.

IIRC some of these retail/restaurant employers are offering some of their ex-employees their job back ... just at a lower pay!!! Naturally any who balk at the lower pay are damn socialists, lazy and would rather stay home and collect their UA.

Those liberal, socialists at CNBC are lying their *sses off. amirite!?!

I saw an interview where a CEO of a hedge fund openly wondering if this is leading to UBI because there's no end to stimmys proposed by Biden and blue states. Not sure if I fully agree but the signaling by politicians is clearly there.

Making more while not working does distort the market but I wouldn't call the effect inflationary. Wages not rising is one datapoint against it.

The Texas GOP Is Taking Money From the Unemployed and Giving It to Fossil Fuel Companies

"But now, the Lone Star State is living up to the saying that everything is bigger in Texas, even greed and hypocrisy. In the last week and a half, Texas Republicans moved to block $8 billion worth of pandemic unemployment benefits for 1.3 million people just days after voting to extend a corporate subsidy program that is enriching fossil fuel companies and has already cost the state $10 billion."

The federal government better get every dime back from each state that ended the program earlier that anticipated.
