...and I think I'll NEVER go back to dial-up. Lightning. Lightning speed I tell ya'! Comcast cable here in Plano hooked me up for $26.95 a month... Goodbye telephone line! QUESTION: Can anyone recommend where to buy a good wireless cable modem? Maybe the best/cheapest... but best is my priority... ya' know, most for the money? Thanks in advance...
You don't need a wireless modem if Comcast already hooked you up. Just get a wireless router...it should be a lot cheaper. Check out the brands at Best Buy (D-Link, NetGear, etc.) BB usually has some sort of mail-in rebate going on and you should get it at a reasonable price. Then go to Lingo and tell your telephone company and their over-abundance of fees to permanently F off.
An antiquated thing off the past now! It's out like the Johns.* *sorry... hope Jeff is in a good mood.
And for wireless modems/routers.... At CompUSA this weekend: Netgear MR814 802.11b wireless Router - $9.99AR Netgear WMB521 802.11b wireless Kit with Router and PC Card -$19.99AR Netgear MA111 802.11b wireless USB Adapter - $9.99AR Netgear MA521 802.11b wireless PC Adapter - $9.99AR
I've been very happy with the Zonet router I got for my brother. I bought a linksys for my folks, and that thing has been very disappointing . . .
Welcome to the 21st Century, dude. I have a cable modem with high-speed through charter at home and really enjoy it. I used to have problems with it going down from time to time, but it has been pretty solid for the last year or so.
i just wish the us will catch up to the rest of the modern world when it comes to supplying broadband. a lot of countries provide much better broadband service (standard adsl in the us is 1.5mbit down/128k up while other countries you can get upwards to a 100mbit down/up connection at home) at a much better price. broadband pricing in the us for the type of connection you do get is extremely high. there are plans from verizon i believe to offer a 30mbit down/5mbit up connection for about 40-50 a month which is about the going rate for most dsl connections. i am happy to have broadband its much better than dial up at home dont get me wrong, but we (the us) pay an outrageous amount for it
One of the issues with other countries having better performance is that they were so damn behind to begin with. The infrastructure here has already been in place for some time for dialup while other parts of the world are going from 2 tin cans and a string to DSL. It's hard to invest and re-invest in infrastructure when the returns won't be all that great. Could you give me some countries with the 100 Mbit connection down? Universities offer that, but it's big-time shared bandwidth. I'd like to look into this more... thx.
Yup, I switched over to DSL a couple of weeks ago too. It's 26.95 for a year, but there's no way I'm going back to dialup. I'll just have to live with whatever the going rate for broadband is when the deal runs out.
Thanks for the technical advice guys... the "recreational" user tips can be kept to your self. Vengeance... I'll have to try the Zonet... you've never steered me wrong before (Firefox, Thunderbird..).
