As long as there have been humans, there have been religion trolls. I don't think many shaman actually believe the stories they tell.

With these guys, there's always the option that he doesn't actually believe it but thinks/knows that it makes for great politics.

Being taught young Earth theory nonsense from childhood does not preclude you from being able to ace an academic test. Unless that academic tests asks if you snakes can talk, etc.

You don't necessary have to be smart to finish college or even get advanced degrees.

I've known many people with college degrees, who got good grades, who are little more than Mynah birds. They're good at regurgitating information but lack critical thinking skills and have little capacity for independent thought. If somebody tells them something outlandish, they won't question it and will accept it as fact. And once they hold a belief, it's hard to change their minds. It doesn't matter what the facts are or how much evidence you present, whichever view they held first is the one that's going to win out. That's how you get someone like Akin believing the female body can differentiate between consensual sperm and rape sperm. Somebody probably told him that and he never thought to question it. He just accepted it as fact and was probably shocked to hear people tell him it wasn't true. There's an overlap with religion here in that many grow up in the church and these beliefs are ingrained at an early age. Depending on how the religious teaching are presented, there may be little room for them to reconcile these teachings with science.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are plenty of people with genius level IQ's who never graduate college or sometimes even finish formal secondary education.

I thought this was going to be about the TV show because the star is gay. Turned out to be another species of idiocy.

Not to derail, but many Islamic terrorist were college educated. It's a myth that education can stamp out religious fundamentalism. It can help, but the power of religious fanaticism and superstition is more than capable of overriding logic, common sense, and compassion.

I'm afraid we are moving towards one of two possibilities, another religious dark age or a future where the practice of religion is made illegal. Just another reason why I'm glad I'll be dead in 50 years.
