Look, I'm starting a political thread! Whhheeee! GOP Admits To Mailers Suggesting Bible Ban http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040924-123312-5544r.htm New York, NY, Sep. 24 (UPI) -- The Republican National Committee says it mailed fliers to voters in two states suggesting liberals want to ban the Bible, the New York Times reported. The mailings include images of a Bible labeled "banned" and of a gay marriage proposal labeled "allowed." A mailing to Arkansas residents warns: "This will be Arkansas if you don't vote." A similar mailing was sent to West Virginians. RNC spokesman Christine Iverson said the party sent the mail, which aroused the ire of the liberal Interfaith Alliance, which called them "despicable." "When the Massachusetts Supreme Court sanctioned same-sex marriage and people in other states realized they could be compelled to recognize those laws, same-sex marriage became an issue," Iverson said. "These same activist judges also want to remove the words 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance." "There is no question that this is where some people want to go, that reading from the Bible could be hate speech," the Southern Baptist Convention's Richard Land said, adding the language and images used by the GOP was "probably stretching it a bit." The mailings are part of the GOP's effort to mobilize support for President Bush among conservative religious voters.
Good lord. And some of you want to re-elect this guy. Can't say I'm surprised. The RNC, Rove and company, etc., have done this sort of thing over and over again. The history is there. Too many people chose to look the other way.
I much prefer the Democratic suggestion that President Bush is willing to sacrifice the lives of innumerable young Americans because Saddam Hussein tried to kill "his daddy."
Yes, I think that's wrong. The real reason is that Bush is an incompetent President. Keep D&D Civil!!
when he says this stuff a few months before declaring war then it makes you wonder if that was at least some motivation for his actions. http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/09/27/bush.war.talk/ Houston is the adopted hometown of the president's father, former President Bush, and in discussing the threat posed by Saddam, the current president offered his staple list of complaints about Iraq's defiance of the United Nations and his contention that Iraq is working aggressively on chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs. "This is a man who continually lies," Bush said. He said the Iraqi leader's "hatred" was largely directed at the United States and added: "After all, this is the guy who tried to kill my dad." In his speech September 12 to the United Nations on Iraq, Bush mentioned the alleged plot to kill a former U.S. president but did not mention that it was his father. The alleged assassination attempt came when former President Bush visited Kuwait during the Clinton administration. The former president had orchestrated the U.S.-led coalition that pushed the Iraqi army from Kuwait in the Persian Gulf War.
Because it indicates Saddam's histility toward the US. The second example contains no reference to "his father" only a reference to a former US president.
I think it's wrong to say that's the reason too. But let's compare. Was there a mailing made up about it? That may not be the reason but it is something that W mentioned. Where as the bible ban mailing is pure fiction pulled out of thin air.
i will! i'm just saying if the administration can claim there were mulitple reasons for the war then i don't think one more is a stretch, even if that reason is a personal vendetta.
I would like to know wha the letter said. All we seem to know is that there was an image of a bible with "Banned" emblazoned across it. What was meant by that is largely conjecture-- open-ended at that! No doubt they hoped that the vagueness would be taken to extreme, but you can't deny that some of the traditional biblical values are under attack by those with a liberal bent.
If you think GWB would articulate a personal vendetta as a justification for taking the nation to war, then nothing I can say will convince you otherwise.
Why does the Republican National Committee have to resort to lies, distortions and slander? Does it have *that* little faith in its own set of values and ideas?
How so? Who's attacking? Is trying to keep the bible out of our laws that have to apply to everyone, even non christians attacking? Sounds like defending to me.
