Some are calling this the Twitter killer. http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html The keynote address is about 1 1/2 hours long. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v_UyVmITiYQ&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/v_UyVmITiYQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
I was wondering why there wasn't a thread on this. I watched a good portion of the video yesterday and this looks like a really cool product. I want this now.
I think that twitter was the beginning of me not following technologies, fashions, or the latest "trends". Google Wave has confirmed that for me. I must officially be old now.
haha i somewhat felt the same way, but didn't realize it in those words until i read your post i'm really falling behind on the 'hip' technology thingies... i dont have a myspace, facebook, or twitter account, i feel so old... at age 23
Twitter is micro-blogging while Myspace and Facebook are more for keeping in touch with friends and networking.
I can understand not having a myspace or twitter account, but no facebook? This is borderline communism!
Essentially, yes. It creates a single platform for a user to incorporate all those different forms of communication.
It's a wiki killer too. Google has done it again -- they've created the next great web application. The video may be long, but you're really doing yourself a big disservice if you don't watch it.
I'm sitting here thinking how amazing it will be when they have this available on the Palm Pre, all integrated with Synergy and everything. This could truly revolutionize the way we communicate -- it breaks down so many walls. Imagine party planning with this thing, and not even using a computer.
after watching the first 20 minutes......I can see this squashing Twitter. Although I don't have a twitter account, I have a rough idea of what Twitter is. I can also see this revolutionizing email and maybe ending IM. I don't have a Facebook account either but Wave seems like a different platform than Facebook(or at least my preception of what Facebook is)......I could be wrong on that??!?!
What it really does is break down the walls between all these services. It's probably not going to replace Facebook or even Twitter, it just changes your approach to doing things completely, and in many cases provides a superior way of doing those things. Instead of simply having status messages with comments, you could have rich status waves. And you have all these extensions that plug into Twitter, Facebook etc. so everything becomes integrated. The possibilities are immense. Just wait till you see the part of the video where they have the translator robot. Really impressive. Imagine what this could do for product development and engineering. Have waves that work on more than just rich text and photos ... a computer program, a mechanical model, with live annotations and sub-discussions. The protocol is open so anybody can develop their own wave system and it will work with anyone else's. I can imagine a wave extension that allows multiple programmers to work on a subroutine simultaneously and chat and comment in real time while doing so. They even have it so companies can interconnect their own private/proprietary wave system with another company to do amazing things with business meetings or even joint ventures. School work and group projects will become infinitely easier and more productive.
Someone has to rain on the parade. And, if it does flop, I can dig this thread up later, edit out this comment, say 'I told you so' and look like a genius when everyone else was riding Google's jock.
